Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

I dont see what's so good abt this WM.
When I tried it out and first logged into it - no panel showing - no bar with tags showing
and yes i did copy the default files - autostart and panel to the .config folder

Do you have dzen (svn) installed?

@ The compiler

On the top there is a conky running, on the top right trayer, started like this:

trayer --edge top --align right --widthtype request --heighttype pixel \
--height 22 --expand true --tint 0x222222 --transparent true \
       --alpha 0

where do I put that, in panel.sh or in autostart?

Probably doesn't even matter...

But ideally you just dump everything from my panel2 git repo into the same directory, and then start the panel2.sh from your autostart.

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

Edit: never mind what's below - Although I had restarted the panel and also Win + r to reload I
found that after a restart the tray was showing correctly.
but any idea why having this in panel.sh didn't work
"$panelfolder/tray.sh" &
but having the full path did?

Cant get a system tray to show
I am just using the original files copied from /etc/xdg/herbstluft
In the panel file there is no call to a tray so I added
/home/dk/.config/herbstluftwm/tray.sh &
the tray shows but below the panel so can only see a thin bottom edge to it
the tray.sh contents are

#!/bin/bash
exec trayer --edge top --align right --widthtype request --heighttype pixel \
--height 18 --expand true --tint 0x222222 --transparent true \
            --alpha 200

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

@dura, if you're still around, oddly enough I just started messin' around with hlwm.  Good stuff.  I've been using cwm for awhile now, but reached into the wm cookie jar this Thanksgiving holiday and pulled this out.  Been reading thru this and the Arch thread.

Not much in the way of creative configurating yet.  I do like so far.  One big hang up for me is the inability for a single window to float.  Makes popups and dialogs quite intrusive to the existing layout, and depending on the layout or amount of windows, can also make quite unreadable.

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

I was also surprised how bad  it was with dialogue interfaces like the dialogue you get from spacefm when renaming or making a new file - it would often just freeze and take up half the screen.

Edit, just installed slightly later version 0.5.3-1  still handles some dialogues in a flaky way but so far the spacefm rename dialogue hasn't froze. The drop down terminal Guake works oddly though.
It seems only a few Tilers can handle these things well out of the box. I never had any problems using i3 or awesome.

I noted some dialogs (like the GTK file choosing dialog) freeze indeed when they're to small, so they just need to be bigger to work.

Guake doesn't work right indeed - there's q3terminal.sh in the scripts folder which is a good alternative.

Also, thorsten` nearly finished the work for decoration/reparenting (which will land in 0.6.0 which is due soon), and some time ago he said somewhen in the next time he'll work on single-window floating. When that's implemented, all dialogs should be floating and in their right size, then hopefully all these annoyances will be gone.

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

yeah I guess it's too much to expect when it's not even at version 1.0 yet   WMs like dwm (which i use) have been around for years so no wonder they handle these things better. I did like HL but these things need to be ironed out more before i would use it full time.

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

not sure if i should necro, or make a new thread...

i've been using herbstluftwm for a few days now. i like it. it's very different from awesome (what i have been using), in a good way. i absolutely love the way you split frames. but i have a few questions:

- is there a way to disable the active border if there's only one client open?
- i've been using dmenu for a run menu. is there anyway to do file completions as well (like how gmrun works)?
- i kinda miss the openbox/awesome style right click/popup menu. is there a standalone app that works similarly?

here's a scrot of my theme progress:

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

I couldn't even figure out how to open any apps with thi sone. minus terminal. I don't think I am meant for tiling WM's perhaps. I wanted to give it a go. It looked pretty. Never sure how people get tiling with some space apart from each window either.

Re: Herbstluftwm thread? - Herbstluftwm thread!

^ read the man page, or the online documentation. It's quite helpful. There are detailed instructions in the online tutorial or in 2ManyDogs' WM topic (linked below).
