Re: If you have nothing to hide, why are you using Linux?

Even If I had something to hide I'd never choose Linux. The risk of backdoors is too high. Linus already admitted that they "tried", Snowden showed that even the Linux RNG is infiltrated.
(Also, that SElinux thingy makes me curious.)

Nevertheless I set up a paranoid machine last night, using OpenBSD with its built-in full-disk encryption even for the boot partition and an EncFS-encrypted folder (tbd) for seriously harmful files, not because I had "something to hide" but because I just could. Maybe some day it'll do its duty for the good thing (tm).

nothing is 100% secure. RSA has been cracked now, so any tool using RSA encryption has the *potential* to be breached. and, to be honest, most of the "in the wild" exploits involving home computers are ubiquitous across all platforms (e.g. a cool boot ram attack - and unless your dismounting your encrypted partitions at shutdown you're doing it wrong).  if an attacker can get a keylogger on your system it doesn't matter if your using FDE or not.

So evidently the US gov is an extremist organization.

I always took it to mean that govt orgs didn't want a corp to have that much control over thier comps.

Having said that, they are extremist groups imo.

Re: If you have nothing to hide, why are you using Linux?

This made me laugh out loud  lol

+1 for the off-topic forum, no complaints here!

On a real-real note: the media flings the word "privacy" around like people have something to hide, meanwhile in addition to "The state of being concealed", privacy also means:

* The state of being free from unsanctioned intrusion.
* The freedom not to have your identity impersonated.
* The freedom not to have your name placed in a false light.

So this "you have something to hide" bull shit is only one quarter of the reasons we enjoy our freedoms, yet the media conveniently skips over these important points. Now, where did I leave my tin foil hat....

For some folks, it's not about hiding anything. It's about choice. Windows and Apple, for example, are a pain in the ass for some people. I use Linux because I prefer it to other operating systems. devil

lolololol! good call. whenever i use someone else's system and i *have* to enter my password, i use the mouse and click around and enter the characters in the wrong order, keyloggers usually can't read the mouse deltas.

It's no logic in that queston at all.. It's like asking:
If you have nothing to hide, why are you driving a red car?

I use linux just because it's my lawfully right to do so!!

Edit:
Did I miss something?
Or did they miss the whole concept of opensource?

really, im a fan of sci-fi and i would love to see a world state & government one day, but i wouldn't like to see the usa bullying its way to pole position.
so, until then, **** off, nsa! go digging in your own backyard!

...letting off steam...

of course this is just a (how do you say "zwergenaufstand" in english) - i have no real action to offer against the us government. i wish i had.
i trust hope that other governments will do that job. sometimes they do - sometimes they don't.

and i did read the whole thread.

ps: is it ok to use the f-word on these forums? or will the nsa come knocking?

Sure, why not? The US-American habit of censoring words is ridiculous in a country where everyone is entitled to shoot civilians. (Good thing this is in Off Topic.)

A gross exaggeration, it is not an open season on people.
And nowhere near as commonly violent as some Eastern European regions.

There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.

Re: If you have nothing to hide, why are you using Linux?

Couple of things- this is a U.K. distro with worldwide membership. The forums are meant to be family-friendly though the occasional swear word is okay depending on context (no using it directed in-community or making a habit of it).

The subject is political (which can quickly bump up right to the forum etiquette guidelines) but falls within technology and Linux, if it drifts too far from that I'm not sure we'll be able to keep it open.

chillicampari. thanks for additional info.

i think the direction where the discussion is going is still important to internet users and still relates to post #1, so here goes:

yes, it's a gross exaggeration, but still i agree.
take tv: a beep for every "fuck" (there, i did it!), but showing blood and gore and violence is ok? no black bars there?

off off topic: just watched a movie yesterday, gimme the loot - that was refreshing! so much f-word in a us movie, yet such warm storytelling! how are they ever going to show this in the us?
