Re: Unable to login after installing windows 7 64bit in my asus laptop

In a terminal, from the live session, try

sudo e2fsck -pfv /dev/sdb2

assuming /dev/sdb2 is where #! lives, and you followed the advice for new userrs in the installer to put everything in the same partition ...

I had to

man e2fsck

to construct that line, I suggest you do the same to double check I haven't put something stupid.

I'm pretty new at this too, so if that doesn't do the trick, wait for someone more experienced.

man .....

This just displays the "manual" pages for a command ie the usage and help information

Instead of posting screenshots, you can copy the terminal output (highlight it and copy), then paste it using code tags in your "post a reply" editor. It makes it MUCH easier for us to read and scroll through it.

file system check failed . A log is being saved in ......

The suggestion was that you read that logfile and see what it says

Re: Unable to login after installing windows 7 64bit in my asus laptop

If this was the other way round, and windows chkdsk had failed to fix the windows filesystem, the answer would be format and reinstall Windows (grabbing what data you could first).

My instinct says to do the equivalent (reinstall #!), but you may have more options I'm unaware of.

Before doing anything hasty, make sure you're checking the right partition on the right disk, it'll be

 /dev/sd?n

where ? is probably a (possibly b) and n is some number designating which partition.  Since Windows setups are inconsistent across machines, it's difficult to predict accurately what the number will be without knowing your partition layout.

If you don't know use the graphical disk management tool from the live cd to find out and adapt my example command in the earlier post (which is almost certainly the wrong block device) accordingly. There's probably an option in that tool to check/repair the filesystem too, although using the terminal gives you way more options.

Re: Unable to login after installing windows 7 64bit in my asus laptop

Can't actually help you as I'm at work, but what I think happened is that #! was installed on the full disk, and Windows just grabbed a portion for itself (having Windows at home and having used it at work as tech support I do not trust Windows...although 7 is one of the better versions).

When doing a dual boot it usually is the best bet to install the temperamental Windows first (leaving enough space for #!) and then, after Windows is installed, installing #! on the free space.

Re: Unable to login after installing windows 7 64bit in my asus laptop

Remove User account from which OS? Since you're dual booting? I could tell you two ways for Windows, one more effective than the other.

You're generally safer as Speedy said, getting windows on first, either leaving space, or shrinking it to make room for anything else.

Windows is thoroughly ill mannered and greedy, grabs two primary partitions when it has no need for more than one, downloads update files to data partitions it's not even installed on... Won't play nice even with other Windows versions.. stomping all over each other's bootloaders... Having windows share a drive with anything is like having a spoiled kid brother share your room...

#! is much better mannered, only writes to it's own bit of the disk unless told otherwise, ASKS before overwriting MBRs and boot code etc. etc.
