Re: no video

First off, are you sure you have flash installed? If this isn't the issue, could you possibly elaborate on what you mean by "wont play video on you tube etc [sic]"

Also, welcome to the forums  smile

Re: no video

thanks for reply yes i sort of understand what flash is but am not sure how to extract or run the program I was not certain of which version of flash i needed. I have downloaded a flash file onto the laptop. I am only really wanting the laptop set up to browse the web.
everything I need seems to be working, I can browse the web but not play any video. I've checked the graphic card, a sis one and appear to have the correct driver installed. When I get to a web page containing any video there is a blank space in the page

Re: no video

Have a search in Synaptic - there are various possibilities in the repositories, including flashplugin-nonfree

Re: no video

...in other words, install flashplugin-nonfree.
it might solve your problem.

unlike windows, linux uses packet management - so your way to install (software) packages is through a packet manager, and NOT by downloading files from your browser interface.

synaptic is a packet managing app and has a graphical user interface.

you can also achieve the same by typing:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

in a terminal.

Install it and see if it works. Remove it later if it doesn't. Synaptic should handle it all for you

Re: no video

bob@crunchbang:~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
[sudo] password for bob:

flashplugin-nonfree is already the newest version.
flashplugin-nonfree set to manually installed.

Re: no video

So you already have it installed

PS If you copy and paste your terminal output between code tags then it is easier for us to read and scroll through wink

Have you restarted?

Re: no video

getting flash video to work in a browser should be trivial - it should even work ootb on a new #! install.
so the next obvious question is ...what did your friend do to your system?
i guess it's got something to do with your sis graphics?

(others: could this affect how flash works? honestly i don't think so. could it have to do with hardware accel?)

zo:
go to iceweasel preferences, advanced tab, and change the state of "Use hardware acceleration when available".
worth a shot.

I second this. You also might want to check under Iceweasel >> Add-ons >> Plugins if the Flash-Plugin is set to "Always activate" or something like "Ask to activate".

Another shot in the dark: Do you have any Add-on installed that forces HTML5 on Youtube? Sometimes they don't work correctly. However, if you don't have something like this installed, you could give it a try and see, if HTML5 replay works. Check this addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo … 5/?src=api (you might have to change the settings in order to make it work properly).

Edit: spelling

Edit 2: Have you tried Youtube (or different video websites) with a different browser?

yum and rpm aren't debian, ubuntu isn't debian, so I reckon you need the tar.gz archive. There is probably a README in it, so I suggest you do smile
(Though there is a shockwave browser plugin in the repos)

Have you got the debian multimedia repo in your sources.list?
