Can't access Windows network or XP machine on network.

Hi, I'm trying to access a Windows XP machine or a Western Digital HD box over a simple network switch, Windows to Windows works without a problem but for the life of me I can't get Crunchbang to work. This wasn't a problem in Scientific Linux but I've just changed my laptop over to #!.

I can see both the Windows Network icon and WDTVLive icon in Network in Thunar but the WDTVLive icon does nothing when I click on it and Windows Network gives me an empty file manager window then 15 seconds later an alert box saying "Failed to retrieve share list from server."

I've tried uncommenting "name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast" in smb.conf and checking the workgroup is correct and tried following these instructions:

http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/s … ith_thunar

but the build is expecting thunarx-1 and doesn't work.

Any solutions or ideas out there? Many thanks.

Re: Can't access Windows network or XP machine on network.

hi you can use gigolo to access your samba share
If you use iptables you have to open samba ports in order to see, your share just add in your rules :

#Samba
 iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 139 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 139 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 445 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 445 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p udp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 137 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 137 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p udp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 138 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 138 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A INPUT -p udp -s 192.168.1.0/24 --dport 445 -j ACCEPT
 iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 445 -j ACCEPT

Re: Can't access Windows network or XP machine on network.

I am using samba, already got gigolo installed and used a Linux Mint Debian guide to understand what I was doing but I still can't access the other devices.

Does Crunchbang access Windows networks and machines in it's standard configuration after a fresh install because that might be my next move, especially as I've now got three different backup versions of smb.conf, hosts and whatever else  big_smile
