chatter from Conky Archive thread

I think it's an excellent idea. The trouble with the big conky thread is that is too big - it's more of an on-going discussion, which makes it very hard to find answers or ideas if you come to it late.

A "Conky Archive" can be like the Screenshots thread: images, plus code - pick'n'mix smile

Re: chatter from Conky Archive thread

Here's another idea - make it a "Closed"-type thread. mrpeachy or some other qualified person chooses posted setups and a kind mod adds them to the collection. That way posted conkys don't have to share space with responses, questions etc - it's a read-only shop window. Other threads can deal with responses to the item in question.

Once it has grown a bit, it could be a great conky resource for the wider conky community

Maybe we need a sticky for conky resources ?

i wouldn't want to make the mods work harder than they do

i think if i keep track of posts, if people post questions, i will repost them in the main thread (or aska mod to move them if that would be ok) and repeat the following:

PLEASE READ
Continue to post your conky code and screenshots on the main conky thread
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=16909

You can post a link to the conky thread in this thread so that I know to add you to the archive, I will be looking through the main thread regularly and adding links anyway

Keep all conky discussion to the main thread.
This is intended as an archive of links only

Per a request from mrpeachy via PM, I have split these posts off from the Conky Archive thread.

Read on in to the forums and realised my idea here was out of date already.

Re: chatter from Conky Archive thread

Now the configs need to be sorted. Either by name or by type - simple, lua based, clocks etc. There'll be some overlapping I suppose.

Re: chatter from Conky Archive thread

@ easysid & mrpeachy

Yup, nice idea ... not trivial ... and my 2¢ ...

${opinion --personal}

It looks like we - what we? - you, mrpeachy, are putting them in order of the newest to the oldest in the Archive.

That's the way I think it should stay because the top of the pile has:

  • the newest developments in conky, version, etc.

  • + lua

  • + python scripts

  • + bash scripts

  • --- you get the idea

these will be the draw for people and further down the 'lists' ... title of this thread comes into play: "Conky Archive"

${opinion}

Otherwise ... a year from now ...

The newest conky ... OK where to put it ... here? nooooo ... here ... ummm maybe here ... naaa maybe better over here ....

or... a year from now ...

The newest conky ... top of the pile!  Done!

Batter up, play ball!

Re: chatter from Conky Archive thread

Wow this sounds awesome, mrpeachy, sector11 thanks so much! I can't wait to be a part of this community once I get crunchbang up and running on my old macbook (just waiting for some monitor cables so I can test it out before I order a new screen to fix it up with!)

Also, I think sector11's idea about chronological ordering newest to oldest makes sense, especially from a maintenance point of view.

About Conky, I googled and found that it appears to be responsible for the system stats that print out on crunchbang's desktop. Is it also what makes people's screens look so cool? In other words, when people post their setups in the screenshot thread, what do they change to get it to look that way?

They change their conky configs of course  tongue (And please don't ask "How?".  First search the Conky thread, look at conky.sourceforge.net, etc, etc)

Welcome to CrunchBang.  And yes, that is a conky on an OOTB #! install you see on the right.

damo gave one of the best answers for the conky setup part.  Go slow, read up a bit and then start tweaking.  The Archive thread is a great place to look for something if you want something already built.

Plus if you look in the Screenshot threads you'll see people have changed Window Managers, themes, tint2 setups and lots more.  Check damo's signature for some really nice ideas and setups regarding customizations.  His "art" is awesome!

Re: chatter from Conky Archive thread

Awesome, thanks damo and Sector11! I definitely will check out the conky stuff once I'm at that point, but first I need to get the hardware operational. Looking forward to it, and this new Conky Archive project!
