mmmm. resizing video question

howdy #! ers.

i have been using versions of this distro for a couple years now and am pleased to finally get off my tail and join the forum.

i've been reading the documentation on mencoder and am wondering about the output syntax - it's not doing what i want it to do, and i have been scratching my head as to why.

i want to resize a video.  so:

//*fliptop@flaptrap:~/video/yep$ mencoder batbatbat.MOV -o batbat.avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc
*//

yields:

//*MEncoder 1.0rc3-4.4.4 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team

any thoughts?  thx.  i will continue to scratch my head but it does seem foolish not to inquire when there are people smarter than i am.  and / or people who have already solved this problem.

Re: mmmm. resizing video question

not sure if i should post; i can't really help.
but have you tried ffmpeg straight?
just today i was amazed how easily i can transcode a bunch of flac audio to mp3 or aac codec.
and if i interpret that command right, transcoding it is, no?
from mencoders complaints i would deduct that it's trying to use ffmpeg anyway but can't handle it.
but you can use ffmpeg straight. their wiki is here.

Re: mmmm. resizing video question

You need to feed it some options for the audio to give it an acceptable bitrate to work with. Try:

-oac copy

or

-oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3

but I am also a direct ffmpeg user so something like

ffmpeg -i batbatbat.MOV batbat.avi

as a starting point, but you may need more options to get your quality right

Re: mmmm. resizing video question

tank you very much for the input.  mostly solved.  mencoder is now getting along with ffmpeg and my file is a tenth the size.

Re: mmmm. resizing video question

ah,  no.  it's an embarrassing cat video. the likes of which are overrepresented on these internets.  the lady is away and she misses the beasts - i am just returned from away and i found that i prefer to not live with pets.  cute?  no.  i very nearly got all the stray fur off of my clothing after 3 weeks.  sadly,  this video is filed under duty rather than joyful pastime.

Re: mmmm. resizing video question

haha, very funny!
but i'm sure joe90 meant it in a much less personal personal way:
which mencoder command(s) led to satisfactory results?
you know, it's always a 2-way-street on those forums: others may and most probably will profit from your solution.
otherwise, forums were just a waste of storage space.
