Openbox crashes

Hello people,
this is my first post in the forum. I use crunchbang on my netbook (Acer Aspire One) for almost a year now.
This is the first problem I face and I kindly ask for your help.
I have installed iRedMail and since then Openbox refuses to open. When I login I get a black screen with an X which moves along my mouse. No openbox desktop.
I have switched to a virtual console and gave startx from there. Openbox started normally but it hanged again when I tried to open the terminal emulator.

I am using CrunchBang 11 Waldorf. My Xorg error log does not have any failure indication.

Re: Openbox crashes

Do following (from CLI):
1) post output of:

$ more /etc/slim.conf | grep sessions

(should contain line similar to 'sessions                 openbox-session')
2) check whether openbox is your selected WM:

$ sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager

This should be set to '/usr/bin/openbox'.
3) check

$ sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager

This should be set to '/usr/bin/openbox-session'.
(I presume you are using openbox as a WM.)

Also, you can inspect file $HOME/.xsession-errors for important messages.

BTW, it would be nice if you introduce yourself ...

Re: Openbox crashes

Hello and thank your for your time:
(1) Output of the first command:

(1) wrote:

sessionstart_cmd    /usr/share/crunchbang/cb-user-setup %user
# sessionstop_cmd    some command
# Available sessions (first one is the default).
# above, so your login command can handle different sessions.
#sessions            default,startxfce4,openbox,ion3,icewm,wmaker,blackbox,awesome
sessions            openbox-session

(2) Output of the second command:

(2) wrote:

There is only one alternative in link group x-window-manager (providing /usr/bin/x-window-manager): /usr/bin/openbox
Nothing to configure.

(3) Output of the third command:

(3) wrote:

There is only one alternative in link group x-session-manager (providing /usr/bin/x-session-manager): /usr/bin/openbox-session
Nothing to configure.

As a last resort I have removed iRedMail and now openBox works again. It seems that it is an iRedMail problem.

Re: Openbox crashes

Interesting, this with iRedMail. Perhaps you may want to go and report it to them ... They may have the solution.

Re: Openbox crashes

Out of curiosity I have tested iRedMail in XUbuntu and it works without problems...
Maybe it wont work in Debian because of the "i" in front of it!  big_smile
