Downloads in Iceweasel Randomly Crap Out

An issue I've been encountering more frequently as of late:
When I download something from the internet, Iceweasel will give the green arrow & the message will appear saying "all downloads have completed" when, in fact, the download is nowhere near complete! I check whatever folder I saved the file to, & find that the file is significantly smaller that the download prompt said it was, &, obviously, doesn't work, as a huge chunk of it is missing. hmm Something small, like a song, will usually download in less than three minutes, but it's become fairly routine that I'd have to try two or three times before the whole thing is downloaded. Something bigger, like an iso, forget it. I've tried about 20 times in the past week to get a single 300mb download, & I've gotten anywhere between 5mb & 220mb before Iceweasel randomly decides to be done with it. mad
Is this a problem with Iceweasel? Me/ my system? Any suggestions?

Re: Downloads in Iceweasel Randomly Crap Out

Does this occur with any and all downloads, or only certain ones?

Does it only occur with Iceweasel? Try using Firefox (get the tarball from Mozilla) or another browser.

If you have another computer you can try, do so. If not try booting a LiveCD and see if you can download normally.

Re: Downloads in Iceweasel Randomly Crap Out

Well. it's relatively infrequent with smaller downloads, like songs & whatnot, but with larger downloads of 100mb or more, the crapout rate is much higher, to the point where I can't download anything larger than 300mb at all, as it just stops half way through & says "all downloads completed" forcing me to try again, & again, & again, with every attempt failing somewhere along the line.

Re: Downloads in Iceweasel Randomly Crap Out

What are you downloading that's 300mb or more? using a standard browser?
anyway...
I've had similar issues with downloading purchased games and such from time to time.  Sometimes there's a time-out on the connection.  You can adjust the 'keep alive' time in Iceweasel and most other browsers too.  The "keep alive" sends a "hello I still need data" packet every once in awhile so that servers that have the timeout enabled don't timeout...

If you want to give it a try you can go here in Iceweasel:

about:config

and enter:

keep-alive

In the search bar that appears and double click to adjust the:

network.http.keep-alive.timeout

variable

For a bit more information on this variable:

I'm a bit of a distro hopper, so I download quite a few isos here & there. Also, folders emailed to me, & the like.

I'll try out your suggestion & see how it works.

EDIT: I tried it, & the download still "complete" failed after 64mb

Launch iceweasel from the terminal:

iceweasel -safe-mode 2>&1 | tee iceweasel.log

. This disables all extensions and gives more verbose debug messages, storing everything in iceweasel.log while also forwarding it to the terminal. Also, fish in ~/.xsession-errors for Iceweasel error logs. Reproduce  the error, look if you can deduce anything from eventual error messages. If in doubt, you can paste it here and we'll see.

You may also try a blank profile. Also, check if the same error occurs when using other tools to download, like another browser or wget.

For guidance on installing Firefox, see ivanovnegro's great how-to here:  http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=23064

Edit:  The link for the 64-bit versions of Firefox in ivanovnegro's post no longer works.  Here's the latest working link:  https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org … ux-x86_64/

What's wrong with that?  I download Linux ISOs that are bigger than that.

I think retf was implying that using bittorrent or other methods (when possible) to download large files might be more efficient. Most of the large distros do have torrents available.

I did this, the download crapped out after 17mb. I'll keep trying other posted solutions, it's just that for me, time has been a bit of a constraint lately.
