Re: December 2013 Screenshot Thread

@Elder and Lurka, I don't use xfwm4 at all, I use Compiz 0.8.4 (with Emerald decorations) over a minimal Xfce 4.8 environment in wheezy on my desktop and over a minimal Gnome 2 environment in squeeze on my netbook. For a few more months on the netbook, that is...
Screenshot.jpg

The whole Xfce/Compiz/Emerald shebang boots to about 90M ram out of my 1G.

@Lurka, 4.10 is in jessie. Are the new features in 4.10 worth the effort of backporting?...
http://www.xfce.org/about/tour
http://www.xfce.org/download/changelogs/4.10

If so, I'd get in touch with stevepusser at the Debian forums, he backports a ton of stuff for Mepis and just mentioned something in the works with 4.10 on wheezy, maybe you could help...
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? … 91#p523514

If anyone want's to try Compiz in wheezy, I'm writing up a post in the WM forum.

As it is now, Compiz will be dead after Ubuntu's next LTS reaches end of life. I was going link to a year old blog post from it's latest ex-maintainer, but I'll split that to another thread since it's sure to spark an old debate...

Re: December 2013 Screenshot Thread

Hey, thanks very much for the info. I tried to do it myself but got hung up on something and am too inexperienced to figure it out. Nice to know it can be done though. I think I'll watch the mepis forums about this.

yea, nice to see you get OpenBSD work on your machine. But no bspwm? Did you tried to compile it with gmake, or bmake?

thanks, I'm still working on it. installed it on a spare ssd and switch it in from time to time. Took me 6 hours to get my wifi running and other 3 hours to port all my configs. Why does it have to say "size:" in Xresources, whereas it works fine with "pixelsize:" at linux?
Actually, I tried to compile bspwm by setting/changing the flags and failed miserably. Any tips?

OpenBSD is on my list of Distro's to try...but after reading your comment vOSH...I think I am still going to put it on hold. lol

Nice set up BTW...

Wow!! That is sooo great!! I spent 10 years as a herring seiner in the Gulf of Maine when I was a kid...worked with a guy in 1972 who was 64 years old at the time and had seen the Columbia leave Boothbay Harbor bound for the Grand Banks. She had put into Boothbay for a load of ice, departed, and was never seen again. He was a young boy then, and stood on Damariscove Island and watched her pass. Columbia ran over her time and went ashore on Sable Island, all hands lost. Many thanks for the link, Snap.

My pleasure!

Aside of loving old boats, these great old BW pictures by  Johnston or Stebbins perfectly match the #! style. I love this kinda top ca 1900 hi-tech meets early 21st century top-tech, as these boats and #! are.  tongue

I change my wallpapers rather often. Now I have a couple of Herreshoff's  90-Footers instead.

I get those old boat calendars each year. Many of the photos portray classic races from yesteryear from Newport, RI and environs. Back then, no one built boats like Herreshoff. You can still see a fair number of Herreshoff S-boats under sail and racing in Narragansett Bay during the summer.  cool

Newport. You lucky guy. I'm afraid I'm at the wrong side of the ocean to enjoy those boats.

@Snap: If you're ever on this side of the pond and in New England, I'll give you the $.50 tour of Newport and Bristol, RI.  The Herreshoff Museum is definitely worth seeing, as is the Museum of Yachting, not to mention Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. smile

Pretty. I would put a smiley here, but they don't have smiles wide enough. XFCE, Compiz and Emerald used to be fun to play with, although XFCE + Openbox keeps me more focused. ("All work and no play...")
