Looking to broaden my WM horizons a bit

Openbox is nice enough, but I'd like to start experimenting with some tiling windowmanagers like dwm (mainly the fault of /r/unixporn). The problem is there are so many interesting options I don't really know where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

select the wm from the login menu, remember they are pretty much default, I think there's a conky and wall on some of them.
There are global hotkeys (Check the release notes) and it's for testing out, not installing.
configs can be changed, normally 'man <wm> ' gives you an idea of how to 'fig it up.
have fun.

@WM

I've just d/l'd and burned the iso for Mint 15 Mate for someone to test drive Linux for the first time. Maybe I should have given them Gangbang instead?  devil

Re: Looking to broaden my WM horizons a bit

Window manager hopping is real fun. If you like/want tiling, I'd suggest dwm or i3. You want a stacker? Go with the almighty cwm. That's for starters.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to start with a minimal Debian netinstall with i3 (for maximum educational value, haha) and if that proves to not be the 'perfect setup' for me I will definitely give Gangbang a spin. The most important question, though, is: as a vegetarian, can I use LinuxBBQ without feeling guilty? wink

I intend to try out both at some point, but i3 is going to be first in line. No real reason in all honesty, just a vauge "I have to decide one way or another, soooooo..."

Re: Looking to broaden my WM horizons a bit

i3 is nice, I like it. On it right now. actually.
if I switch WM I find myself 'alt+1'ing  to get to my term screen.
I recommend 'BBQ Honey' latest i3 spin.

Re: Looking to broaden my WM horizons a bit

AV, bbq has plenty to tempt the palette with wm spins.  There are a couple of releases with not quite the amount of wm's as gangbang that are installable options - pidsely, colin, slime.  And one of my favorites, bloat, a build it yourself spin with a RYO option to finish off the install.

You probably know most of this already as you have found your way over there.  Good Luck

Re: Looking to broaden my WM horizons a bit

Or to stay with debian stable you can try livarp. The lead developer (arpinux) declares this project "dead" a few days ago but hey, it is debian and we all know it's only a modification of your sources.list file and it propably lives forever. Give it a go in live-mode or real install. Very nice and useable pre-configs of all wm's.
Livarp comes with:

    vtwm
    dwm
    ratpoison
    wmfs
    dwm_reloaded
    spectrwm
    evilwm
    openbox
    PekWM
    awesomewm
    fluxbox
    dvtm

Re: Looking to broaden my WM horizons a bit

I'm using Window Maker, and I'm actually pleased with it. Love that it's lightweight and has a simple dock:

@tao-of-linux:  I don't use WM, but I love its dock applets.
