100% free software Smartphone device!

just found out about this, from the Openmoko project :

http://neo900.org/

$800+ , 200-unit production run intended at that price point , that's understandable.

# RMS was stopped from endorsing the Gta04 because it's wifi firmware was non-free , but now the project aims to solve that point!

Thumbs up from me, even if it's going to be a while before I can afford it. I wish more people cared whether their hardware can be trusted to be 100% theirs.

Re: 100% free software Smartphone device!

Personally $800 for a phone (800 USD = 4726.56 ARS x2 for import/electronics/luxury tax = 9453.12)  is a tad too much.

I'd sooner have a dumbphone:

- fun reading

And for that reason my wife and I still use our Motorola "flip-top" aka "feature phone" aka "dumb phone"

If you want to buy a car do you buy a house with washer/dryer, dishwasher, fully furnished, including 42" TV, desktop computer and air conditioning  and a garage (that happens to have a car in it)?

That's what is happening to phones today ... they call them "Smart phones" but pay attention to the TV commercials, how many do you see where they are 'using the PHONE'  ... no no no ... cruising the net, playing games, taking pictures, not even text messages anymore with all these little "action icons", the TV ads here say: Talk (type) less ... [icons] more!

Kind of like:
cool  - it's sunny today
glasses OMG! s/he it is hot
ops - you make me blush
kiss kiss me quick and don't slobber
devil Oh you are bad!

I see things like: The dumb phone is being done in by the proliferation of cheap smartphones, most running Google’s Android operating system.

Wait one: Google’s Android operating system!  aka "ET Phone NSA"   sad

Oops ... more then I originally wanted to say ....

Where's the keyboard on that thing though?  If I'm ever going to get a "smart"phone, it d@mn well better have some kind of physical keyboard and not just a touch-screen interface.

Yes; as a matter of fact, I am a cop.  Why do you ask? cool

I would buy that thing for say max. 250 bucks - and if I had funds to spare I would also donate. But I haven't and so the only thing for me to do is hope that it works out and maybe in a few years I can get a smartphone which runs on FLOSS - but the perspective of not having one isn't something that keeps me from sleeping at night... wink

But really, that project looks nice and promising - regardless of the price-tag.

Re: 100% free software Smartphone device!

If this is the unit:

neo900.png

I like the idea of it, but hate the layout. I would like th see one with the virtual keyboard like most other smartphones, plus a port to attach a reaal keyboard if need be.

FWIW, I like the Ubuntu unit much better, and would probably get one if it was fully waterproof, and I could nuke the ubuntu install and stick something else on it.  --A dual boot option would be cool as well.

Re: 100% free software Smartphone device!

The specs seem underwhelming considering its going to run Debian (i.e. a full Linux OS). Also I'm not enthusiastic about a 3.5" screen with a measly 800x480 resolution. For the money I'll pass and buy a Nexus 5 and Nexus 10 instead.
