http://www.distrowatch.com

By the way, I just downloaded Salix OS for another laptop and it doesn't have Openbox native to it -- on the latest release you get a choice of either Xfce of KDE.

If you choose to take this route, don't worry -- we'll leave the light on for you when you return.

Dagnammit. My mistake. If you go on their Sourcefource page you can get Fluxbox and Ratpoison versions of the previous 13.37 release.

Thought I'd play around again with my main desktop machine - so VSIDO was installed again. Fast and slick, but I'm afraid that I'm spending too long getting it to look and act like crunchbang, so I guess I'll install jessie!

I repackaged: My Little Buntu - Openbox is Magic.

to: 'My Little Dian - Openbox is Magic'  - NICE! lol lol lol lol

I mean really why use a derivative of Debian to get at Debian packages when you can just use "Dian" direct!

Nice little distro intoCB, thanks!

Re: Suggestions for distributions to try while waiting for the DDoS to end

I love LinuxBBQ Elektra, if you feel like going knee-deep in command line interface.
Today I tried Arch Linux, might want to give that a try if you want to try something different from Debian. Manjaro makes it easier, though it removes the fun of the challenge.

Re: Suggestions for distributions to try while waiting for the DDoS to end

madbox is still around? nice. havent tried a new version for ages.. 12.04 is LTS with 5 years support by the way.

edit

just gave it a test. looks way more the ubuntu style (wallpaper and fonts) than back in 2009&2010 when I last tried it.. but this is about all it has in common with normal ubuntu.

it is fast as hell even from live cd.. 120 mb after boot, openbox environment with no dektop icons, but with lxpanel on top, nice and simple conky, pcmanfm and chrome.. not many programs shipped in the  330 meg iso. only terminal, htop, pcmanfm, gnomemplayer, pdf and picture viewers and geany, htop. basta. not even an archive tool... but hey, ISO is under 330 mb and i386.. nice for old boxes. no software center, flash and mp3 preinstalled.. ubuntu stripped down as much as can be. 5 years support. very nice.

last time I tried it it came with adeskbar as dock at the bottom, cause the developer wrote adeskbar as well and it wasd some kind of special touch to this distro. but it is not there any more. whatever.. I like it.

something to throw on old boxes to have a minimal working system.

Re: Suggestions for distributions to try while waiting for the DDoS to end

Personally, for all of the Crunchbang aficionados present, I'd suggest merely waiting for the DDOS attack to run it's course.
Crunchbang being based upon Debian will be more than stable enough to use as a production level system on a daily basis without updates for weeks on end with negligible worries until the Crunchbang Repositories are operating at designed efficiency.
Just a friendly reminder of the facts is all <thumbsup>.
Meanwhile, I'd estimate not more than 3 days or so however before the attack is finally negated for those who prefer to remain updated nonetheless.

I expect most people will stay put. I expect those who stray will find their way back once the DDoS is over.

I, personaly speaking, am here for the long haul. CrunchBang #1.

Excellent!
That makes a large number of us truth be told which I believe is only logical considering the activity in concern to the Numbskull Crew's dis-pleasurable attacks (ongoing, quote...unquote) as a byproduct of the target elsewhere.

Chromebang. Oh wait, that's out. But that's my top choice.

Ok, in this order, Livarp, VSIDO, Archbang, Dragonfly, FreeBSD (all using Openbox, fluxbb, awesome, dwm, or evilwm plus tint2).

Or, non-nix, BeOS/Haiku!! Loved BeOS!

But in all honesty, no worries, #! will be back soon.

Ditto.

For my part, #! is the only distro i've used that has never given me any trouble (except maybe for Trisquel 6 and Point Linux 2.2). It's reliable, light, and does everything i need it to.

CrunchBang is the only distro I've used in the past three years, full stop.  As I see it, #! is Debian done right.

Re: Suggestions for distributions to try while waiting for the DDoS to end

Well, it is a great distro, but I like multiple choices. I use and install #! on customers' machines, but I love playing with other distro as well just out of curiosity. To be honest, I've mainly been on sid for the last two months and I'm lovin' it. Now I got Arch on one of test PCs and I'm happy to play with it for a while.
That said, #! is the perfect Debian stable for me.

Terragen and Crazy Bump. I used to have them both working fine in xp in virtualbox, but I'm having difficulty getting win7 installed in the VM (I haven't spent any time figuring it out yet). GIMP does everything I want (and with 2.9 I can have 32bit support as well) so no need for photoshop smile

Terragen crashes in wine, and my Crazy Bump.exe wants to install a load of DirectX in wine, so the installation also crashes. It's easier at the moment to just install win7 in sda1!
