Is a reusing or sharing a /home partition actually a good thing?

I can see the value in having your music/videos/stuff on a partition seperate from root. That is obvious, but what about the other stuff in /home? Are reusing/sharing all of those a good idea? It seems to me that installing a different distro (lets be honest, distro hopping is like drugs but better) and having it share /home is a bad idea. Configurations for certain programs get overwitten, and sometimes these things configure version dependent features that may not be compatible with your other install.

Right now, I have seperate logical volumes for videos, music, comics, and stuff which all get mounted at ~/{music,videos,comics,stuff} while all configs I want to keep are all in my Dropbox folder. I think this is a good solution.

Do you share /home? Why or why not?

I prefer not to share /home either for the same reasons you listed.

I used to, not anymore.
it's feasible if you make a seperate user for each distro, but that makes it annoying to share/remember where everything is.
Like you I have (in fact the old /home partition) i just didn't mark it in the fstab as /home.

where different distro's can have different configs and updated versions of software with differnt configurations or tweek it is best to have different user folders. one thing you can do is create symbolic links from a share partition/folder and thus link to each user ie music,bin,etc and add all users(even though they are you) to the same group. Home is just a folder for multible users or one user so there is nothing wrong with using the same home folder.

obstacles are only in your mind. how you deal with them is what "matters".

I never share a /home. I always share the swap partition, though.

Re: Is a reusing or sharing a /home partition actually a good thing?

The main reason for having /home on a separate partition, is that it makes re installing your distro easy if you mess it up.

I have shared /home with different distros, but you can get into a mess.

I use a /data partition nowadays, this contains all music, movies, videos, pictures, graphics, etc.

I access the /data partition from any & all installed distros via /etc/fstab entries.

Using it like this you can have as many distros as you want, & still have easy access to your most used files.

Re: Is a reusing or sharing a /home partition actually a good thing?

My solution is to have all my data on a separate partition, and use symlinks in /home

eg documents -> /media/homedata/documents
     images -> /media/homedata/images
     etc

This way the configs for each installation aren't affected, but /home accesses the same data whatever I boot to
