Startup Problem

I'm having problems at startup. Crunchbang starts up goes through the grub bit and it gets to the scrolling text when the screen goes blank, hangs and I get a cross in place of the cursor arrowhead. My son told me to do CTRL-ALT-F2, login and enter startx and it's all okay until my next start up.

Please could someone suggest where I need to look to fix this.

Thanks.
