Brightness and volume fn issues on kernels 3.9 and higher? (solved)

First I looked up this issue and found some people had solved not being able to properly use their fn + brightness keys and fn + volume keys by modprobing a module that included wmi in it's name so I modprobed asus_nb_wmi (my specific model is an Asus u56e) which seemed to work. Lately however it works but it randomly decides not to work all the time. I guess until there's a fix I'll just use the 3.2.0-4-amd kernel.

Re: Brightness and volume fn issues on kernels 3.9 and higher? (solved)

I fixed my fn key problems more or less by compiling the kernel myself.

If the kernel dependencies would compile hmm

You could post the output here maybe someone else can help.
I'm unfortunately not very experienced with compiling things.

Re: Brightness and volume fn issues on kernels 3.9 and higher? (solved)

I'm going through the dependency list on kernel 3.10.9 and it's isdn4k-utils that doesn't want to compile

$ make config
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/todd/downloads/isdn4k-utils/scripts/lxdialog'
gcc -O2 -Wall -fomit-frame-pointer -DLOCALE -DCURSES_LOC="<curses.h>" -c -o lxdialog.o lxdialog.c
In file included from lxdialog.c:22:0:

compilation terminated.

Re: Brightness and volume fn issues on kernels 3.9 and higher? (solved)

Alright well I decided to just try http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic. … 65#p277465 and the kernel compiled but I got no wifi on the new kernel and usb things didn't want to show up in thunar. So I booted to an older working kernel except after trying to login to slim I just get a blank screen no cursor and startx refuses to load hmm

The only other thing which I can add is the guide I used to compile the kernel.

Maybe it helps.

Re: Brightness and volume fn issues on kernels 3.9 and higher? (solved)

Odd on the old kernels (where x is mysteriously not working right) I can do sudo startx and xinit i3 or xinit i3 -- :1 and it works but X crashes immediately when I go back to a tty...

Edit: removed all the compiled kernel things from /boot and /lib/modules/ and reinstalled one of the older kernels, X is fixed slim has a bit of a delay before it starts but it works.

Re: Brightness and volume fn issues on kernels 3.9 and higher? (solved)

This time I tried http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.or … n-building and I ended up with these problems on the kernel: (to summarize usb and sd card things not mounting and wlan0, for wifi isn't able to be ran)

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/todd/TOSHIBA: Command-line `mount -t "vfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/todd/TOSHIBA"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'

          RX bytes:40584 (39.6 KiB) TX bytes:40584 (39.6 KiB)

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/todd/3312-932F: Command-line `mount -t "vfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/todd/3312-932F"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'

ip link set wlan0 up
Cannot find device "wlan0"

I checked my older kernels and wlan0 is my wifi that I need, so until them I'm on the older kernel.

Edit: just found out the kernel I'd been trying to compile is in the siduction repo so I just went with that and if the issue persists I guess I'll just wait for a fix.

2nd Edit: so far looks like it's fine and not an issue on 3.10-9 kernel smile
