My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

So, yeah. If I leave my #!11 laptop on overnight (which I always do), I will wake up and it will have frozen at some point during the night. As in, no mouse or keyboard, can't crtl+alt+fx, conky conveniently freezes at the exact time the failure occurred.

Pertinent info:

tralce@alyx ~ $ uname -a
Linux alyx 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.41-2 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It's a 2 year old Asus U53F but I'm sure that doesn't matter.

I have distinctly noticed that nothing during the time of the freeze is collected in /var/log/messages. I did write a little script:

tralce@alyx ~ $ cat debug.sh
while true
do
	date
	uptime
	sensors
	free -m
	sleep 15
done

Which I left running all night. When it froze up, this was the last log entry:

So I'm no closer to finding a solution. Think you all could toss some ideas out there?

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

This may or may not be the problem.  I notice if I have iceweasel on certain websites (those that run scripts) and leave the
machine alone, iceweasel will hang, and hence, the entire computer box.  It takes forever to kill iceweasel.

Study what you have running before you say good night - maybe open a terminal and enter "top" and see what is on
it the next morning.

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

That's a great idea. Dunno why I didn't think of that...
I'll have a few tops open, sorting processes by CPU, RAM and time. Or something. See you tomorrow.

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

The two top process during the freeze were python (for Wicd) and /usr/bin/X11/X -nolisten tcp -auth /var/run/slim.auth vt07. Neither of those are out of place or are consuming any more CPU or RAM than they should be. So, nothing.

Should I run Memtest? Should I leave it on a tty overnight in case it's a panic I can't see?

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

please run

sudo hddtemp /dev/sda

and run

sudo smartctl /dev/sda

and next

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda

if you don't have smartctl type

sudo apt-get install smartmontools

then post all info here smile I think your HDD might overheat during the night.

If you'd like I can 'watch sudo hddtemp' overnight, see if it gets much hotter.

Also, just finished a big memtest and everything checks out, there, so it's not memory.

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

Your HDD temp is perfect.

Can you try installing latest Luquorix kernel? Do not start conky, and tell us if your laptop freezes during the night.

And I think the CPU temp is little high. Did you clean your laptop recently? If you didn't it is a good thing to do.

Here is a GUIDE how to do it. And you can change the CPU paste with some Arctic silver mx2.

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

Often a system hang will not leave any info in the logs, which can make it very difficult to diagnose.
Your best chance is to list your hardware and search bugs.debian.org using 'system hang' and a hardware component typical for your system, maybe including your kernel version and/or your wifi kernel module.

Of course if you are the first user experiencing this problem - which is unlikely - this will yield no results.

I did a good cleaning when this all started. The temperature is a little high but nothing outrageous for an Asus laptop. These seem to run a little hot.

What would installing this kernel gain me?

Just looked at it and didn't see anything. I'll open it in multitail tonight and see if anything exciting comes up.

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

Just try this kernel. If it hangs again we can exclude the kernel. With this kernel you can undervolt your CPU and you will have much cooler laptop and long lasting battery smile More info in Tips&Tricks page or search for undervolting. smile

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

It didn't hang with the Liquorix kernel last night, but it also didn't hang with 3.2.0-4 from the standard Waldorf repo the night before either... I'll keep running both, switching off by night.

Re: My laptop hangs/freezes but only when it's idle.

I've been switching off between kernels and there's really no difference. Almost definitely not a kernel thing. No neat news in logs and nothing in users' mail. Is there some cron-like job running on an idle machine?

Also I reinstalled the OS a couple days ago and it's still doing it. Got a new hard drive and it was just as easy to install the OS fresh as it was to transfer the old copy over.

Maybe this can shed some light? Also, I installed sendmail only because, a lot of the time when I've had issues relating to cron jobs, the errors get thrown to a mailbox. This did not help.
