Re: Debian Wheezy release date - place your bets!

Actually I`m not waiting for the Wheezy-release, I`m waiting for whatever will replace Sid as unstable, when Sid becomes the new testing-release... Kernel 3.8.8 is installed and stable, so I probably wouldn`t downgrade to the wheezy kernels... smile

well, I thought that's the main reason people are excited by wheezy. I mean, why would anyone wait for an already a year old OS devil

whatever will replace Sid as unstable

sid will always be called sid, btw. next testing is jessie.

I`m relatively new to linux and Debian, so I`m not sure If I understand it correctly. Sid is the unstable, and wheezy is the testing release today. When wheezy goes stable, are you saying that Sid still will be the unstable-release, and that there will be a new release(Jessie) that becomes the new testing-release? I knew that Sid still would be called Sid, but I thought that it would be the next testing. If not, will Sid always be the unstable-release?

^ You've got it.

Sid is the only Toy Story character used by Debian that is not a toy; it's the name of the neighbor kid that enjoys breaking toys.  Thus, the unstable branch of Debian - where breakage, while still rare, is most likely to occur - will always have the "codename" of Sid.

Re: Debian Wheezy release date - place your bets!

From the Debian site:

"We now have a target date of the weekend of 4th/5th May for the release. We have checked with core teams, and this seems to be acceptable for everyone. This means we are able to begin the final preparations for a release of Debian 7.0 — 'Wheezy'. The intention is only to lift the date if something really critical pops up that is not possible to handle as an errata, or if we end up technically unable to release that weekend (e.g. a required machine crashes or d-i explodes in a giant ball of fire). Every other RC fix that does not make it in time will be r1 material. Please be sure to contact us about the RC fixes you would like included in the point release!"

OK. Then I got it. But that means that I`m not waiting for anything at all. I will never use anything else than unstable, so then I suppose it`s just to sit on my current installs, until something eventually breaks it into a unfixable state. Grrr.. that sounds a bit boring. Me who waited for something really unstable.... Perhaps Sid is unstable in certain production systems, but Sid isn`t unstable at all for me. I`m at 3.8.8 and never experiences any issues at all... Actually, Squeeze and Wheezy are more buggy for me than Sid.

Re: Debian Wheezy release date - place your bets!

My understanding is that after a stable release comes, a "flood" of new stuff hits Sid and breakage is most likely at that time.  After some time passes, Sid settles down and is "safer" to use.  The prudent choice is to wait awhile on Sid?

Re: Debian Wheezy release date - place your bets!

^ No... There will be some changes like Xfce 4.10 coming over from Experimental, but SID is an ongoing process that changes daily

The freeze cause 'parking' issues where Debian has no place to put things until the freeze is lifted..  Most are in Experimental and I use several apps / dependencies from there when I need them

Having used SID on several hundred machines for two cycles now, there is nothing about the freeze lift that I fear ...

impressive. don't you have any problems managing configurations on a rolling cycle? I always imagine it being a nightmare.

If they continue squishing those bugs at that speed the release will be before 4/5th of may.
