If you are using iceweasel there is an AddOn called EPUBReader.
Haven't used it myself.

You can use fbreader to read epubs natively, or install calibre, a software to collect, convert and read all kinds of book files.

I can vouch for EPUBReader; I'm using it to read through Past Sins (only available in epub and hardcover) "in my copious free time."

I use fbreader myself. It's the best solution I've found for opening all the different formats of e-book out there. You can build an index of all the stuff you have on your machine too, so you have a library you can browse like you would on a kindle. I haven't tried any of the other apps out there recently, but a couple years ago when I looked into it fbreader was the only one that worked smoothly for me.

^ I'm glad fbreader works well for thy material. cool  It was the first thing I tried when I ran across Past Sins - a highly recommended fanfic, by the way - but it only showed the epub title and chapter headings. sad  A second interwebz search led me to EPUBReader, and while I dislike having to have my browser open to use it, it works adequately. monkey

Re: [solved]how to open an epub file in crunchbang?

Three epub readers were mentioned: EPUBReader,  fbreader, calibre.   Of the three, which one is lightweight.
I would like to read and write epub files - nothing else fancy.  Only have 4G on this eee laptop.

Also anything else that read epub files?

i use calibre and it works well.  it seems to be relatively light on resources and it allows me to sit in front of my laptop far more than i would normally which is important in a tool.

Oops, I forgot another ebook-reader, ebook-speaker. It let's you hear the book via a synthetic voice - and it works for all languages, espeaker supports.

@shengchieh: If you want to write epubs, Emacs might be of help for you.

I use epub2pdf. Works pretty good for me.

Re: [solved]how to open an epub file in crunchbang?

I have liked FBreader in the past.  New code to the linux version stopped at 0.98.  They consensed to focusing their development on Android.  Smallest footprint.  It seems a pretty cohesive group of developers, if you want open source on Android - they are a serious consideration.

Calibre is a monolith of many pretty good tools put together and hyper-updated.  Almost too hyper.  You can run it cli by typing ebookviewer "book" Of course you can open an ebook via right clicking in Thuanr of pcmanfm or open via Calibre.  Say what you will about it, it's filing system is fairly decent, albeit not open to dramatic changes.  The command line tools are only available via assembling the entire 25-30 mb ish total.  The binaries will go into opt.  It has one of the largest userbases.

If you are serious about learning about .epubs and seeing the innards of them I would recommedn sigil.  You can actually see it as a standard .epub in book view and then toggle over to view the raw .xhtml and the style sheets.  Sigil 0.62 would be a good stopping place if you are wheezy or above.  QT4.8 is needed and they are among the fore-front of apps making the plunge to QT5.0 for their 0.7 and eventually up versions.  You will have to compile in Debian unless you want to try the Ubuntu ppa.

peace mark

Re: [solved]how to open an epub file in crunchbang?

IMO, PDF is the best format for digital reading material.  Why?  Well, there are apps, including those for tablets, that allow you to highlight text and keep the highlighting with the file.  I haven't found any apps for other digital reading formats that allow you to do the same under Linux, Windows, OS X, or iOS.

I use Calibre to convert ePub to PDF, but sometimes the results aren't the greatest.
