Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

I think you must search for a Debian compatible laptop. Because of Debian and problems with new hardware and the system requirements you can buy a very old laptop. Perhaps IBM thinkpad T/X-series like T40 or X40 eg. 10 years old.

Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

Actually, seraphtrend, you could go that route (I'm a ThinkPad guy and use a T60), however there are many options out there. When you buy new hardware from just about anywhere, it rings up one more Windows user even though you may not be using Windows on it at all.

So  usually I suggest that if you want to support Linux, you should buy from one of the Linux hardware vendors like System 76 or ZaReason -- the difference is that System 76 will put on any distro you want as long as it's Ubuntu, and ZaReason will install a choice of a wide range of distros (including CrunchBang, by request).

The down side here is that the hardware is more expensive than the mass-produced hardware made in sweatshops overseas.

Intel processor with integrated graphics. Atheros or Intel wireless. Synaptic touchpad. That's all you need to have everything working out of the box.

How about those companies that produce laptops like ZaReason and System76, how do they produce their own machines?

I've been using a Samsung R540 and everything works, and has always worked w #!. Wouldn't necessarily recommend this machine as the battery life sucks, but I've never had any hardware compatibility problems with it.

Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

I'm also a think-pad guy Current is t530 Intel hd 4000 graphics, Intel 6300 wifi, you have to upgrade to the 1600x900 resolution screen because of having 3 antennas for wifi to use the 6300 card.

I get 8hrs of battery life with this setup.

I run Sketchup with out a problem better than windows actually with a few tweaks.

Looks like intel is the way to go. what do you folks think aboit nvidia? After hearing the Invidia CEO talk about Linux as being a superior operating system I wonder about using it's in the laptops.

Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

Think-pads are more durable and they last longer for me. I think the new Intel hd 4000 is adequate for light gaming and 3d work with the added benefit of not being a battery hog. I also like the keyboard better its almost as good as a desktop keyboard even better in some ways mines lighted for example. I also like the touchpad/?finger mouse? better than any other laptop.

ps this is the first time I went with an integrated gpu and I'm very happy that I did before I always went with the best nvidia  the market had.

Nvidia GPUs have better capabilities than Intel video (e.g. the CUDA cores can be used in the background for parallel computing via BOINC), but they can be a pain to configure properly, even with smxi.  If you like using TTY1-TTY6, you'll still be able to use them, but don't expect them to still look as good as they do with the regular framebuffer system.

Think Pad T430 Intel version is a good choice. My laptop was very easy to configure and everything works out of the box with #! Waldorf

Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

Lenovo is no guarantee. They even ship laptops with uefi secure boot and very tricky broadcom wifi cards. Intel hd graphics is no guarantee either. Lots of people is having issues with them with kernel 3.2.0.3 and kernel 3.2.0.4. Freeze issues. Kernel 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6 solves this issue, but kernel 3.7 and 3.8 introduces new issues. Impossible to boot without "nomodeset", and that causes other issues again:)))

But the T-series Thinkpad is probably your best option anyway. Just don`t buy a Lenovo G580, it will give you lots of headache:)

Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

yes the t530 and t430 are eufi bioses. But it can be disabled easily if you want.

also with smxi upgrading the kernel is strait forward and it works flawlessly the Intel 6300 card has been around for a few years and I have not had problems with it on any computer I have run.

I also had the freeze up issue on my computer and the last half dozen kernels have runflawlessly.

 uname -r
3.7-8.towo-siduction-amd64

I am a fan of thinkpads but I have run it on about every major brand with little trouble so what every you choose the forums with be here to help you.

Re: I would like to buy a fully #! compatible laptop

You're welcome to surf thru my long list of preinstalled linux computers

http://shengchieh.50webs.com/tuxslinks.html
-> Retailers
-> Linux pre-installed vendors (including laptops)

Ignore some these links - servers only or desktop only.

Some of them sell their computer w/ many things on it.  If not #!, I advise it works w/ debian.  Then all the drivers
will work w/ #1.

Hello Folks,
I hope no one minds me reviving this thread, but I'm curious about what you all think about this new computer from System76?  The Galago UltraPro.  I see that it is not available yet and they are taking pre-orders.
