I know for me, when I just started using crunchbang/debian in general all the tutorials used the apt-get command so thats all i knew to use...it wasn't so long ago that I found out about aptitude.

@ChickenPie4Tea: Seriously. Open a tab of your favorite web browser, go to your favorite web content scraper/search engine, search for {apt-get vs aptitude}. Please. This is yet another old, ongoing debate.
As to the specific question posed above, they used to have separate databases, but they've been sharing notes for the past couple years at least.

I believe the original post had something to do with apt-get vs. aptitude; see the two responses after the original post.

yes I had read conflicting debates on the web and was still unsure if aptitude was really ok to use or outdated - but I am hoping folks will just ignore this thread now thanks.

Some confusion may arise from the changes in aptitude and apt-get over time; seems the latest general consensus is that one is just as good as the other for most things. If you encounter conflicts, aptitude will give you options, whereas apt-get will either resolve the conflicts on its own or will balk.
