Sorry for being a nuisance and if I'm posting in the wrong section(firstly)
I'm trying to install a different Distro - As I'm completely out of my depth here, everthing has to be manually installed (wireless, SD reader, sound ... ) and I have no idea how to do so.
But once I put a new Distro on a USB - it just prompts me with a black screen saying SYSLINUX copyright (dates) peter anvil.
And I was wondering if there was something I didn't know and had to do, or if it was just like installing from any other distro?
EDIT - could this please be moved to Help and Support (Stable)

you mean you have to install everything by hand in crunchbang or in your other distro?
format your usb properly and try again, if it just hangs. this SYSLINUX message usually shows up before almost any distros boot menu. maybe your download is bad (check md5 sum) or maybe you didnt write it properly on your usb key. what distro is it, how did you copy it to usb?

I mean I have to install everything on CrunchBang and I don't have that knowledge.
I formatted it to FAT32, the download is good (checked md5sum)
It's Peppermint 3 and I've tried copying it with Unetbootin, Linux Easy 123 and Win32DiskImage - they all end with the same black page.
And I've also tried installing Kubuntu (thought it might be peppermint) and the same thing happens.

Use the dd method.
Make sure you are installing an iso with the correct architecture. I.e. 64bit will not work on 32bit.
To check you architecture:
dpkg --print-architectureLast edited by dura (2013-02-18 20:59:13)

Someone mentioned on a different forum that it could be because my USB was being read as FDD instead of HDD - and it happened to be because of that. Don't ask how I changed it because I have absolutely no idea whatsoever.
Anyway, thank you all for all your patience, you have truly been wonderful. Maybe - at a later date when I am more experienced I will give #! another try - but for now it's not for me. Yet, I have not one bad thing to say about it, the experience, even though it was a complete headache, was very interesting!
Salutations and maybe see each other around here at a future date!

I wish you luck on finding your linux home however, if you don't mind, why isn't #! for you? Just interested.

Make sure you don't use unetbootin but usbcreator (if you can't dd a hybrid iso directly onto your usb drive).

Because it caused me to slip into extreme frustration. But who am I kidding, it's not like I didn't feel that the first time (and following months) I touched Ubuntu.
So here I am, a few days later and attempting a round two at #!
Make sure you don't use unetbootin but usbcreator
Is that only available for m$? would linuxliveusb also work?

welcome back! -- dude, you better use the dd method - there is a link on the download page. you dont need an extra program and learn a command.

Got it. And you got a point there. One thing though . bs=4m which is in the example - what does 4m represent? because it tells me invalid number.

Try capital M... for Megabytes.
WARNING: make sure to copy to the correct device or you might find out why dd is sometimes referred to as "data destroyer".
