Re: Recommend me a good, free email service.

Interesting! I wonder if claws-mail (which is a close relative of sylpheed) handles the IMAP structure differently. Though, I doubt it big_smile

Thanks for the feedback!

No problem. I have tried claws in the past. Maybe I'll give it a go again and see if I have better luck.

Anyways, I just tried playing around with my lavabit account in Sylpheed. I changed it from Imap to Pop, and the account works perfectly in Pop.

Weird, I was having some lag with POP, but IMAP is instant.

Lavabit - POP - just a few seconds slower than my ISP mail also POP.
Figure that out.

Re: Recommend me a good, free email service.

Well, I ended up updating my Sylpheed, and for some reason that app won't build my tree. So I have no way of getting my emails through that client now. Tried it both the latest stable and the beta, and I can't use either. And I can't seem to roll back to the version that I was using in Stable.

But this was kind of a blessing in disguise as it made me revisit the terminal based clients again, and I'm going with Cone(tried Mutt one more time, but again, that client is needlessly overcomplicated, for me at least). It displays all my mailboxes in a tree manner, and it handles lavabit just fine. All around it's so much faster than Sylpheed.

So I'm a pretty happy camper now.

I was pretty using the wrong settings or something. I installed IceDove as it automatically takes down all the settings for you. And of course Imap lavabit worked fine. Incoming and outgoing. So I copied the settings from IceDove into Sylpheed, and it was now able to receive incoming pretty much instantly, but it wouldn't send any emails. I was having a terrible time with that email service on that client...

hahaha, what a great coincidence: i just spent the whole morning in search of a recommendable free webmail service.
i ended up with http://www.mail.com, which is in fact the same company as gmx (unity media) and the service seems to be similar.
the interesting thing about mail.com is that one can choose from about 200 domain names for the email adress.

as a gmx user for more than 10 years i can recommend them, even if their privacy policy shouldn't be much nicer than the GOOGs - but they have much fewer services, ha!

another provider i haven't looked up entirely but thought to be interesting is http://email.is which is based in iceland. well this obviously requires a quick look into information privacy laws of iceland...

i set up an account with email.is - the interface is VERY minimal.
is it even possible to use it with a mail client (imap, pop)???
d.

Re: Recommend me a good, free email service.

I'd like to contribute a few thoughts on this, a subject near and dear to my heart:

1. If I were in your shoes, I'd stay far away from GMX and Mail.com. Their webmail interface, which I believe is the same on both sites, is atrociously slow and poorly designed. Spam filtering is nonexistent and one is bombarded with tabloid journalism when logging into your account (which one often cannot do because of downtime).

2. Lavabit records the IP address of the computer used to send any message from an @lavabit.com address. This information is available to anyone who knows where to look - in the full message headers.

On a final note, the Lavabit e-mail servers do record the IP address used to send an outgoing message in the header of an outgoing e-mail. Because of this, it is possible for the recipient of a message to identify what IP was used to send a message. We record this information in the message header so that law enforcement officials in possession of a message that violates the law can identify the original sender. Lavabit does not retain this information.

This is a shame, because they provide a very good service otherwise.

3. Stay away from all things Google. Nuff said. lol

4. I have been using by Mailoo.org and Autistici.org for the past several months and have been extremely happy with both services. I'd give a slight edge to Autistici (A/I) though, as it's been around for the past twelve years.

I am not particularly worried by Google Analytics - it's more or less impossible to avoid visiting sites that use it. My concerns are focused specifically on services connected with a Google Account, e.g. Gmail/YouTube/Blogger.

i'm blocking google analytics with ghostery. no problem.

a question about mailoo.org, i opened an account (3 actually) recently but i can't log in.
the website says they're overhauling their servers for a couple of days (it was in french, which i don't understand too well), but it's been a coupleof weeks now.

I can successfully log in to both of my mailoo accounts as of right now.

A few weeks ago, they were doing a donation-drive to raise the money for a new server, but that seems to be over now. As their website says:

A real thank you for your many gifts.
This is going to be a great help as we can welcome two new machines for a little over a year in the short term.
these two machines with the availability of the service will be increased and latencies (imap errors) met regularly at peak hours will be resolved.
Again thank you for your generosity and we will keep you informed of all developments in current and future.

(Rough french > english translation courtesy of Google Translate, which - for once - seems to have made a bit of sense!)

I've just signed up with them. Their webmail interface is just a little bit more web 2.0/flashy than I'd like, but in that respect it's much better than GMX/Mail.com/Gmail. The account is set up with Icedove now, which is what I'll use to evaluate the service.

There's nothing special about their interface; it's only a slightly customized Roundcube installation. smile

Re: Recommend me a good, free email service.

If your really worried about privacy, why not get a cheap hosting account(hostgator or something) and manage it all yourself. Though it's not free, $5 a month to host multiple email domains, unlimited storage, host your website also, ....the benefits go on and on.

Of course I actually use google apps, i'm lazy and always want all my contacts, mail, and calendars in sync on any device i have.

But my next bet would be hosting it myself.

Kindest Regards,
Tim A

You would be mistaken to assume that any host (including HostGator) would not hand your info over in anything more than a nanosecond, if prompted.

I was told that running shared hosting mail servers was suicide from a security point of view. Is that the case?
