This is a glitch that I've experienced on Statler as well as Waldorf:
Sometimes, after my laptop screen has gone dark because of idleness, and I try to "revive" it by pressing a few random keys, the screen only goes from black to really dark, so that I can barely make out the windows I had open. I haven't found a way to revert this change, and always have to reboot the OS when it happens.

Do you run nvidia? There is quite a few pages around about similar problems, some here on the forum, and elsewhere.
Just answering because nobody else is...
Nope, I have Intel Integrated Graphics.
I'll have to bump this, since it has happened again several times.
Can't you increase the screen brightness when this happens, using your fn keys, or with something like xbacklight -inc 20?
I didn't know about the xbacklight command and will try it next time, but the keyboard FN keys do not work when this happens.
just sudo apt-get install xbacklight
then xbacklight -dec 30
or xbackligt -inc 30 or whatever, as Mr. rkwurth says.
I find remapping keys or getting them sorted via other fiddles puzzling...
