Skypey problem..

Hello all

I hope someone can help.

When I run skype (2.2) and I am in a call, my friends can see my webcam but I cannot see theirs. The part where the cam should be is just totally blank (white)

Any ideas?

Thank you

Marianne

Re: Skypey problem..

Tried Skype 4.1?
Must use an older version on OS X Tiger but never tried a webcam so can't say if they've changed video codec or not.

The Debian 7.0 deb should work nicely - just open it.
If that doesn't work install it via the terminal: sudo dpkg -i skype-debian_4.1.0.20-1_i386.deb

Re: Skypey problem..

ops Should've read more carefully.. you are still on #! Statler (Debian 6) and version 4.8.0 of the libqt4-network package is only available on #! Waldorf (Debian 7). That means you're stuck with Skype 2 if you want to stay on Statler.

Re: Skypey problem..

Hi and
Happy New Year!!
While I now favor GoogleTalk I did use Skype for years.
So, I installed the skype-4.1.0.20.tar.bz2 Dynamic Download from the Skype Linux Download site
http://beta.skype.com/en/download-skype … -computer/

So, Download and extract it to your /home/users directory.
...You may have to
Copy the the contents of /home/user/skype-4.1.0.20/sound  to /usr/share/sounds
... but try skype w/o it first.
Just open the file manager. Go into the /home/users/skype-4  directory and click to run the skype binary. (place in Menu Later)
Should open in Statler just fine, It did for me
Once started type in UserName and Password... Agree to conditions.
Click lower left SKYPE Icon and click options.. check Video..Check Sounds
Have fun

Re: Skypey problem..

I'd also suggest just installing Waldorf. I run it on my desktop and laptop without issues. I'm using Skype 4.0.0.8 (haven't bothered downloading the latest recently I guess). Anyway, it works without any issues, although I haven't tried video chats.

Re: Skypey problem..

Hi,
I'm not sure if this helps you Marianne as you may wish to stick with Statler, but I haven't had a single issue with Waldorf on my HP netbook.  Skype 4.1.0.20 installed without a hitch and video chat worked out-of-the-box.

In any case, some people on the Skype forums solved this issue by updating their Nvidia drivers.  Do you happen to have an Nvidia card?

Re: Skypey problem..

@sql

I did what you recommended above and it just installed the same version I already have. Did I do something wrong?

Re: Skypey problem..

^ Hmmmm..
Baffles me, as I have statler installed with the same version of Skype as you do..
So, let's look at some errors as to missing dependencies.
Open a Terminal and CD to the skype Dir..
Make certain you are indeed in that dir with an .. ls .. command to list the Dir contents and then run the skype command from the the command line.
Either try

 skype

Or

./skype

now post your errors..

Not a different version. Just a alternative method of calling/running an app.

Regarding seeing other people's images via video. Make certain that they are 1st of all allowing you to see them. They could have the Video their image OFF in options.

Re: Skypey problem..

./ is used mostly to insure an executable sh script will run.

Do you have 2.2 installed..?
Cd to it's dir and attempt to run it from there and note the results.
