Progams you cant live without?

Just curious to see what programs/tools you could not live without during your day to day computer usage?

Re: Progams you cant live without?

For me it's got to be owncloud.

Hosted on an old spare machine at home.

cloud storage via browser and/or webdav

but more importantly, online calendar via browser and caldav.
My partner and I both work shifts so without our shared calendars
we'd be hopelessly lost.

Cheers,

T

Re: Progams you cant live without?

Midnight Commander - mc - always have it.
Also must have an audio player, xmms, audacious, or moc usually.
Web browser, usually iceweasel.
Anything else is nice, but no other necessities.

Chromium-browser.
Any text-editor with spell-checking.
Any spreadsheet that reads Excel files (which becomes the default language of all spreadsheets).
Any terminal.
...and Pandora. Fine, a service, not really a program, but without music I go a little bit nuts.  monkey

Re: Progams you cant live without?

Wow, so far everyone has had small lists.  Technically, I wouldn't die if I couldn't use any of the following programs, but they make my life, or time on a computer, more enjoyable, efficient, or productive:

Rainlendar
File manager (Xplorer2 Pro - Windows, PCManFM - Linux)
Audio player (Atomic Player - Windows, Guayadeque - Linux)
VLC
Web Browser (I try to use three or four)
KeePassX
Text Editor
Spreadsheet program
Personal financial program
Conky
Rainmeter (Windows)
Openbox
Quick Cliq (Windows)
Crap cleaner program (CCleaner - Windows, Bleach - Linux)
Revo Uninstaller Pro (Windows)
Calculator
GPG program
CD ripping and encoding program (Easy CD-DA Extractor - Windows)
DVD ripping and encoding program (Slysoft tools - Windows)
aptitude/apt
Sandboxie (Windows)
Truecrypt
TreePad (Windows, but runs under Wine in Linux)
eBook DRM removal software (Windows)
Zinio reader (Windows)
Kindle reader app (Windows)
Foxit Phantom Standard (PDF creation program - Windows)
Screen capture program
Diff tool
Image editor or graphics program
Bootable USB thumb drive creation program
Anti-virus program (Windows)
Firewall program
Secure file deletion program (Eraser - Windows, secure-delete (srm) - Linux)
iTunes (Windows - for my iPad)
Calibre
CD/DVD/Blu-ray writer program
Adobe Digital Editions (DRM'd ePub reader - Windows)
Adobe Air (Windows; both the Kindle and Zinio reader apps require this)
Image viewer (XnView - Windows, Viewnior - Linux)
System info program (PC Wizard, SIW, or Speccy - Windows, Hard Info - Linux)
Windows Sysinternals Utilities (Windows)
Synaptic (for browsing, searching, or discovering apps/packages)
PDF viewer
Boot-Up Manager (Linux)
GParted
Airport Utility (Windows - for my Apple Airport Extreme router)
Tint2
Network-Manager Applet (Linux)
File compression/decompression program

Re: Progams you cant live without?

Assuming everything else I need is within the distro's repositories, the only programs I really can't do without are a package manager, some kind of front-end to the package manager, and some networking software to access the outside world; the rest is gravy. monkey

Re: Progams you cant live without?

dmenu
vim
bash
everything else is nice, but there's more than one way of doing most things: fvwm, openbox, spectrwm, and i3 would all be survivable as the only WM I used, if necessary (though fvwm is my current one in heavy use...)
