Does anybody know a great place where I can get a durable and powerful laptop? I'll need it for my upcoming deployment. I prefer not to really go over $4,000 if possible (Tax not included). Thanks in advance

By durable, do you need something really rugged that can stand falls and extreme weather, or just something better built than a consumer laptop?
For the former try:

For the latter, take a look at HP (Elitebook), Dell (Latitude), or Lenovo (Thinkpad).

By "deployment," I'm assuming you're being sent to a place where there's a conflict and where the conditions are not terribly ideal (good luck there). You might want to check this out:

Many of these are in the upper-$2,000 to mid-$3,000 range, and you can spend more on some of the options.

Yes by Deployment, I mean Afghanistan. I need something powerful and able to withstand multiple falls if it happens. I'll take a look at those links, thanks

You're welcomed to surf thru

-> Retailers
-> Linux pre-installed vendors (including laptops)
and see what is there. I don't think have any links specific to rugged laptop, but I might.
Warning: list is mixed with servers and desktops.

Out of curiosity, what sort of laptop is there that cannot be bought for lesser than $4000? (excluding the pointless machines like those swarovski laptops).

@gensym - If you cannot find a preconfigured gaming/engineering/pro CAD laptop for $4000, you can at least customize it to be over $4,000. One might question the use of having all that power in mobile (though heavy) device, but there are people who need such machines. The aforementioned Toughbooks also can be pricey.

^ Strange. Anyways I better not take the thread too off-topic.

Well I just want something to last the months out on Afghanistan and I'd like to be able to finish my game backlog when I have downtime. At least some. Thanks for the link though. I'm still searching unfortunately

Does that mean you did not like the Toughbooks, or did you not check it out yet?

Oh I checked them out definitely. I'm not purchasing right away, so I'm keeping all options available. I'll be getting it around July/August at the latest, so I'm just comparing any I find suitable to each other
