Hello, I recently got an old IBM thinkpad T40.
Crunchbang runs fine on it, except for the wifi which I couldn't manage to configure. To activate wifi I have to launch a fn+f5 shortcut.

I don't see any wireless wifi card or anything in these code lines, is it possible that it isn't detected ?
I think it should be an ipw2100 or 2200. (installed the firmware, but no result)

Any clue ? Where should I look ?

Offline

Be excellent to each other!

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

No wireless card is detected.
Try installing the rfkill package and check if wireless is blocked perhaps:

sudo apt-get install rfkill
rfkill list

Or perhaps wireless needs to be activated in BIOS?

Edit: There is an entry in the dmesg output that warns for outdated BIOS/firmware.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Thank you for such a fast answer !

So I need to update my BIOS, how do I do that on crunchbang ?
I googled a bit, but everything I found had to be done on windows.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade_Downloads
For the t40, the bootable CD for linux is missing.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade
So, I need to find a boot image to extract from one of the others ? I have no experience with this and am kinda lost, can somebody explain this to me ?

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Unless you have Windows as dual boot I would keep a bios upgrade as the last thing you do. Have you tried as the Good Doctor says installing rfkill and then

sudo rfkill unblock all

P.S. The Good Doctor is not necessarily suggesting you need to update your bios, but first that you have a look to see if wifi is disabled by it.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Hi, sorry for the delay.

Yeah, updating the BIOS seems to be dangerous, as I have no windows partition on this computer. (and no win xp cd or usb stick and would prefer not to reinstall it)

I installed the rfkill package, but I don't understand how it works.

When I type instructions

sudo rfkill list all

I got no response

Same with the "unblock" instruction, what do I have to expect ?
Even after rebooting, I can't enable the wifi thing.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

sudo rfkill unblock all

unblocks all radio switches. Once you use rfkill unblock all, check nm-applet to see if any networks are available. If it is that wifi is blocked, you will have to unblock it using rfkill after all reboots, or have it turned on by default through some script (i.e. I use tlp). If wifi is not showing up in nm-applet you have to do something else.

The good doctor isn't suggesting you necessarily update your bios. When you boot up, press esc or whatever it says to enter bios. Then have a look around and see if you can switch wifi on or something.

You have used wireless on this machine previously?

Try:

sudo apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi

But that should already be there...

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Still nothing with nm-applet.
When I press fn+F5, some light indicator should be turned on, but nothing.
(maybe the shortcut isn't activated ? where could I check that ?)

Didn't found much in the BIOS settings, may take a look further.

No, I didn't check for the wifi on windows when it was still installed, (will remember to do so next time...) so I was never able to connect wirelessly with this computer.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Die T40 Reihe hatte nicht - obgleich Antennen verbaut wurden-  per se Wlan, evtl. liegt es daran.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

"Some IBM T40 laptops were made with wireless capabilities, but others are not so equipped."

Maybe...

Is there a way I can be sure weather I have or not a wireless card ?
(even by opening the computer)

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Ich habe hier einige alte Thinkpads herumliegen und alle Karten werden von Crunchbang erkannt, vermutlich hast Du keine Karte. Ich selber musste damals bei einem T40 diese nachrüsten.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Maybe you should have a looksey to see if you can find the serial number of your t40 on the bottom and google 't40 your serial + wireless card'

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Seems Bärenhäuter might be right and you just have no card in it...

^Wouldn't it say blocked by hard switch or something...?

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

No, I checked for a switch first. (before checking if I've got a wifi card...)

But thank you Naik, I searched everywhere, not knowing where it could be but I have none.

Re: Wifi on thinkpad t40

Yeah thats right..
if you really want to be sure, you could easily remove the keyboard
and in the middle, right beneath the screen there should be the w-lan-card wired with one white and on black kable comming from the screen and ending in small golden plugs.
as it seems the kables and plugs should allways be there but beeing conected to nothing if you havent got any card..

have fun searching...
