I have new hardware and am now having trouble with Debian Testing, Aptosid and Crunchbang Waldorf. The installer is reading my sda drive as the sdb drive in each case. Other distros such as Mageia, Linuxmint LMDE and Arch are installing normally.
Are others reporting this? Anything I can do?

If you are installing from pendrive, it sometimes happens on a couple of my machines, try using a different usb port.
Set the hdd to boot before the usb (if no OS installed)
(May or may not work for you.)

So install to sdb. The installer does that sometimes. Make sure you install Grub to the right disk designation. If it's read as sdb, then refuse to install Grub automaticaly, you will be presented with a choice to install it manually, and enter /dev/sdb
Offline
Well, intending to install on sdb instead of sda I tried the install again. This time the installer reported the correct partitions so I installed and updated. When I rebooted for the second time I was given a host of errors. I went back to the first kernel but got more errors.
Something in the system is reading the partitions wrongly. Here are some of the errors:
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
/bin/sh:can't access tty; job control turned off
Begin: running/scripts/init-bottom...mount:mounting /dev on /root/dev/failed: no such file or directory
dmesg /fail
adding 8191996K swap on /dev/sda8 swap(swap is on sdb8)
Offline
So, I'm guessing you have another install, since swap is on sdb8? Can you run
sudo blkidfrom that install? Then mount your broken install to /mnt and give me
cat /mnt/etc/fstab /mnt/boot/grub.cfgOffline
I don't use grub2 I installed it on root (sda10). I use an old Mepis to boot from.

When you boot and get to Grub, hit "e" to edit the line for Waldorf, navigate to the kernel line, and change root=long string of numbers to root=/dev/sda10. Then hit Ctrl X to boot. It's my best guess, I'm not that familiar with Grub one, and everything else seems to be in order.

No luck. The error message is:
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned offIt appears to be the same for all debian based distros. I had no problems of any kind before the hardware upgrade.
Something to do with the EFI Bios?
As I said Aptosid, Crunchbang and Debian itself are all reading the partitions wrongly before anything is installed.
Offline
I have no idea to be honest. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
Offline
I was wrong about only Debian based OS's misreading the partitions. I tried a PCLinuxOS live CD today, same thing.

Boot from the old Mepis install. Download and run the bootinfo script from my signature and post the output.

Thanks doc,
I have downloaded and extracted your file but since I don't know much about running scripts could you give me exact instructions please.
I think the problem is the EFI mobo. Is there anything I can add at boot which would solve this? Or anything I can change in the Crunchbang .iso before I burn it?
The Manjora installation offers a selection for EFI and it works fine. Sorry if I am not making sense, this is a bit above my paygrade!

Open a terminal window.
cd to the directory where you downloaded the script.
Make it executable:
chmod +x ./bootinfoscriptThen run it

Please use "sudo" or become "root" to run this script.
Run the script as sudoer:
sudo ./bootinfoscript <outputfile>
or if your operating system does not use sudo:
su -
./bootinfoscript <outputfile>
For more info, see the help:
./bootinfoscript --helpPost the output.
I have no experience with EFI mobos.
Hope someone who has steps up.

If this installation created an EFI partition table I don't think you can get at your other distros if they were setup using a DOS partition table.
You either have a DOS partition table or you have a GPT; if you installed Manjora after the other distros & used a GPT partition table the old DOS partition table will have been overwritten.

You have legacy grub installed in the MBR of sda1.
And grub2 in the 'partition mbr' for a lot of distros.
In this situation I would update the menu.lst file on partition sda2 to try and chainload the grub 2 bootloader from the #! partition.
If that does not work, pick one distro to be your main distro.
Boot from live media to chroot into the distro you chose.
Install grub2 into the MBR of /dev/sda
If that works, you will have a problem booting into your mepis install, because that is still using legacy grub.
bootinfoscript - emacs primer - I ♥ #!

OK thanks.
My problem still is the system I have has been working flawlessly for 5 or 6 years until the new mobo went in and then almost nothing was being read properly except Windows. The installers from 4 out of the 6 distros I have since tried are reading the disks wrongly before anything is installed at all. Archlinux and the old Mepis were all of Linux that was functioning after the new hardware was installed.
I have to think that the mobo is involved.
However I will put grub2 into the MBR to try out what you say. (I have used it before and didn't like it at all but perhaps I wasn't using it properly.)
Thanks for all your time on this.
