Got the wifi chipset recognised by installing network-manager-gnome and removing wicd in the Xfce install I did last month. There's some kick-ass code attached to a desktop that no one wants to use...

Agreed, it would be wonderful for an XFCE version of #!.
However, I do understand #!'s focus and mission to develop one really solid environment.
Installing XFCE and removing Openbox/Tint is pretty easy, but will take a little time.
An alternative for those who would like a XFCE distro (Debian Wheezy based) out-of-the-box experience, I'll suggest a stroll over to SalineOS. Saline appears to be very much in the spirit of #! and SolusOS, with a fantastic developer and focus on one DE. #! (Openbox-Debian Stable), SolusOS (Gnome 3/(2)-Debian Stable) and SalineOS (XFCE-Debian Stable).

I noticed the other day (somehow i managed to install xfce unintentionally - playing with xfce-panel) that there is some cute looking git-gui interface. What is it and can i do similar with openbox?

I use Xfce and do not know what this is you have seen or know of a git-gui.
Do you have a name for this app, or where/how you saw it?

Justcallmecrash ... kewl nick. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF IT FIRST ... darn it !? With that outta the way ... Babbling all over da place opinions to follow.
Ya could always become a "big fan" of the #! Tips-tricks section. Like just about everything else, it's no doubt been covered in painful detail there ( ... also probably SEVERAL times.) The only thing standing between you and installing 34million de's/wm's on #! is some reading.
Only guessing Corenominal is keeping it simple for a reason. Though as with any good distro, still leaves you free to do whatever da hades you want with and/or to #!. Have a coupla of times wondered the same ... Why not more versions ... blahblahblah ? Am sure the guy has his reasons AND as babbled about already, you have the option of installing xfce in 10mins if you really want to.
End babble ... Vll !

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

Actually, 2 minutes and 26 seconds.

Re the git-gui it could be one of gitk (doesn't look that great, comes with git by default I think), gitg or giggle, but there are a few others, those are the ones I have installed at the moment.
And any of them should work under Openbox or any other WM/DE

I`m not against a XFCE version of #!, but for me it will never be an alternative. The freedom that I get from openbox is well worth any hazzle I might have configuring it. That`s a big part of the fun. I probably shouldn`t promote other distros, but LM has a nice XFCE-version that you could install side by side with Crunchbang. Then you could boot into that every time you get a bit nostalgic..
Personally I have chosen Crunchbang as my main distro, and will stick by it. But I`m always dualbooting with a second distro. The second distro gets changed all the time. I use it as an outlet for mye distro-hopping. LM13-XFCE was there a month ago, then "PeppermintOS Three", and now I`m dualbooting with Pear Linux 6, just out of curiosity... It looks nice, but it`s not for me, so I`m dualbooting with Bodhi tomorrow. Then Sabayon and Mageia, and hopefully after those I can settle a little bit. Only problem is that there`s always a new distro to take a look at :-D

May I suggest a distro that is even a bit more similar to the #! approach if not already happened. LinuxBBQ Chorizo, a spicy Xfce spin with nice CLI apps and based on Debian Sid.

Really good points.
For the more advanced user, stock #! is wonderful. It can be tweaked from here to eternity!
For a newcomer, or say an older person who may be used to a more user friendly environment, an easier GUI out-of-the-box experience is usually always most beneficial to the user, as well as the maintainer.
I suppose it could still be the #! openbox version, but "factory-modded" to look and act more like something like XFCE or LXDE, with panels, menus, icons, etc.
Maybe an idea for suggestion...a spin for non-techsters or older folks?
Sure, it's easy to move those types of kin over to something like Xubuntu, Lubuntu or Mint...but then we're right back to the bloat which we originally wanted to move away from. Hence, alternatives like Saline or Solus.
It's so much easier to re-install, or update to a new image without a need to always sequentially install the alternative DE as well.
Food for thought.

Nice spin for sure.
Just waiting for the updated md5sums.

Why did you suggest that? Now I have yet another distro I need to try:) Never heard about that one. Not on Distrowatch top 100, as far as I can see. Is it brand new? Well, I guess I`ll find it out when I go there:D

Oh sure, but not all of us have a direct connect with Debian Servers. However this is an excellent point!
This says it all:
the greatest thing about Debian (and #!) most everything is just an apt-get install away
CrunchBang comes the way it comes and makes it what it is.

Installing Debian on the netbook now.
Xfce is going to be the primary DE, but might be fun to throw Gnome3 or Enlightment on there, too... See what's out there.

Linux needs a new WM - CaféCup and a new DE - JavaBlack

Aye, there used to be one for Nautilus that was really good. Since those days I have learned the ins and outs of git via terminal and prefer it.

Has one of you used SalineOS? I'ld be interested what you think before I download it, not much time at the moment. That said, after using Xfce on Slackware and derivatives for so many years and then discovering how good Openbox can be (some spins like PCLOS Openbox don't do it justice, though still nice) I doubt I'll be going back to it much.
I once went for a support job that required using OS X. I quit the training after a week.

Found an ISO from 2010 of #! with and Xfce version on it.
After work, going to install it on the netbook (same one that's running Debian now) and see how far I can bring it up to date.
