So lately i noticed two problems:
a. video tearing (integrated intel graphics) playing with mplayer or vlc does not make any difference (also testing many different mplayer options didnt help) - no difference if compositing is enabled or disabled either, also no difference if video is lowres or HD (cpu load is small, no more than 15% reported in all cases).
to test:

b. openbox freezes under heavy hd load (That looks similar to a problem with really old kernels, i think i remember that from jaunty and perhaps karmic running gnome) - and i mean freezes: can't even move the mouse.
b1. openbox almost freezes under medium load (libreoffice restoring some documents)
How would one go about this two?

a) Try running mplayer thus:
mplayer -vo gl:yuv=3 <video>b1) Try to disable Java and hardware acceleration in LO.

thanks for answer:
a) same thing, tearing with mplayer -vo gl:yuv=3 <video>
b) the question was how its even possible that dumb office would be even allowed to take so many system resources?

Regarding the video tearing, it has been reported as a Compton issue. The issue is currently open and the devs are looking at it. If anyone has any comments to add, it would probably be best to do it upstream.

Fabolous! Now i can actually notice bad compression on some videos (previously was just annoyed by vsync or lack of it).
I can still see fast top>down wipes on cuts occasionaly, but i guess that is to do with fps interpolation and its not a vsync issue. Basically this one fix got my waldorf from "quite usable" to "valid os"
. Mucho appriciated.
