Is anyone aware of a utility that allows the user to view a file's metadata?
I've installed tracker-extract from the repos, but it's not showing anything. Maybe most files don't have metadata to indicate what kind of files they are?

"Metadata" is an inherently ambiguous term; after all, IS META.
What kind of files' metadata are you interested in in particular?
while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

After using photorec to recover a bunch of stuff from a drive that went bad (I had to replace the PCB to do this much), I find that there are a lot of binary files of unknown type. It would be nice if I could tell which ones were cad or 3ds files. It's not a big deal, but it would be nice.
