Hi everyone.
I'm not #! user and I don't even understand what it is but I was just attracted by the promise of a warn welcome.
More seriously, I bought a new laptop and can't wait quiting my job to try #!
The (Packard Hell) laptop provides a non-functional Linpus distro. I'm quite new to Linux and I tried SliTaz for a couple of months (really instructive) then Fedora 16 LXDE and now I use Fedora 17 LXDE. I'm quite happy with it but wanted to try something else and during my numerous searches about Linux, I fell on CrunchBang (especially useful forum posts) so many times that I decided to try it.
I find #! philosophy really interesting and am seduced that only the necessary soft (and the one I'm used to) are provided.
Yesterday I tried the live version (not BPO) but the kernel was too old and my wifi device was not detected. As my connection is really slow (another reason why I only use light distros), downloading the BPO version was impossible.
Wish me good luck

Welcome, too,
With #!, you'll have OpenBox out of the box, but since it's Debian based, you can easily install LXDE (if you want) on it.
OpenBox is rather nice, snappy and lightweight and easy to configure.

So I downloaded the BPO version but it did not work ... I checked the md5sum which turns out to be bad ...
Can't tell why and it is not the first time it happens ... It is either my workstation (debian/KDE, file copied with Konqueror) or my USB stick (brand new).
Fortunately, I started the torrent download yesterday and it seems to be good so I'm now retrying with unetbootin ...
lcafiero : I really needed a psychological support !
hinto : I will not install LXDE because not really fitted to dual-screen and build around PCManFM (I prefer Nautilus).
Even though LXDE is quite good, it comes with softwares I don't use that is why I was seeking for a light distro.
I really like Fedora but yum (which is to me a very good package manager), is too slow because it always downloads the cache (due to the "leading-edge" philosophy of Fedora). The bad news is that I don't know much about apt. The last time I use it was on a distant server ... it crashes and I had to call for support
It seems that openbox with a good panel would be enough to me.
And last but not least, I have this hard drive parking issue (on my current laptop). I have to execute the command by myself at each restart
To conclude, I want to make waves by introducing my most secret wish :
having an openSuse-build-like (web or GTK) interface : proposing a minimal Fedora or CrunchBang. The user could add the packages I wants. He would be notified about the packages available in the standard version. He also will know about a bunch of flavors. In a first step this will just generate a post install script to download the proper packages through apt and installing the additional files the user provided. But at the end, a complete system able to generate the personal iso.

@poulain, I don't run LXDE, either, just because of dual screen support. I mentioned it since that was what you were using on Fedora. Personally I run XFCE on #!.
As far as apt goes, you can use it, or better yet, synaptic , the GUI front end.

In fact, I found a solution for the dual screen with LXDE. But this took me so much time ... I only tried XFCE one and was really too lazy to figure out how to configure it ... I don't know if I will use Synaptic or apt. I heard that this is a choice to make and to stick to.

Welcome, brave traveler!
so I'm now retrying with unetbootin ...
Most people have not had success with unetbootin; dd is the preferred method for putting the live image on a USB thumbdrive.

@hinto, by setting LXPanel's geometry as I did (Width : 1920 pixels, Alignment : Right, Margin : 0), it was auto adjusting well : my external screen was at right and the panel was displayed only on it. And when unplugged, LXPanel was properly auto-adjusting on my laptop's screen (without having to modify the geometry).
@pvsage : I don't have the root permissions on my workstation so I had to find a way to create a bootable stick. I was able to download unetbootin as a stand-alone soft, it seemed to work but I was not aware of your method. It seems so powerful ! Is it working with other distros' live iso ? In fact I had to use 2 or 3 times unebootin until it worked, now I have a clue. But I did not figure out what was the problem with the wrong checksum ... The md5 of the iso file on my workstation is right. It's either Konqueror's copy process or my USB stick. In fact, I was amazed by the time the copy took (about 2 sec). Any idea ? It's really worrying and stressing not being able to rely on a simple copy process !!!
Is it possible the use of unetbootin corrupted my installation ?
I also suggest that the "dd" appears among wiki's "Pages of interest".
By the way, there's a tiny error : Super+w does not open the web browser.
During the install process I was prompted for using LVM ? What is that ?
Is there a way to adjust the luminosity of my screen ?
I really liked the post install script.
Finally, what takes so much Bytes (among the 650MB) because this distro is quite light ?

Wow...at this time of morning, I'm really only able to answer the last question. (`sudo apt-get install coffee-second-cup`) The ISO is so large because it includes a boatload of proprietary device drivers (Realtek, Broadcom, etc.), VLC's codecs for everything-under-the-sun, and The GIMP.

By the way, I noticed two issues : my wired ethernet card was not recognized at install (does not matter for the moment as I use Wifi) and there is no sound which is a bigger problem. The device seems to be detected but VLC insults me when I open it. Will investigate that tonight.

For wired ethernet, post output of
lspci -knn |grep -EiA3 netFor sound: Go to this webpage, download alsa-info.sh, make it executable, run it, post output on the alsa site and post a link to it here: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … p_To_Debug

@xaos52 http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=1ee90 … 50f3df3467
I tried to create a .asoundrc file without success.
Wifi-connected, I tried the automatic upload process on alsa-mixer : did not work, In fact I'm unable to send/upload anything in wifi so I tried ethernet (which I had to test) and it works. So I'm now with the reverse problem : the wifi is problematic.
lspci -knn |grep -EiA3 net outputs :
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:0032] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Lite-On Communications Inc Device [11ad:6617]
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Device [1969:1083] (rev c0)
Subsystem: Atheros Communications Device [1969:1083]
Kernel driver in use: atl1c
And here are some other problems I'm facing don't feel obliged to answer (I will investigate first) :
- on login, my username is not selected
- can't tune the luminosity
- no sound
- wifi issue
- hdparm issue (even with the script installed in /etc/pm/...)
- when closing the laptop and reopening it : screen stays black

Try upgrading your kernel to the latest version in backports and let us know how many of your problems it resolves
Here is a link for how to do it: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/258392/#p258392
BTW: The latest version for amd64 is now 3.2.0-0.bpo.4-amd64
You have 2 sound cards. You will probably have to create an .asoundrc file in your $HOME to specify the defalt one. Search the forum for asoundrc. There are plenty of entries.

I tried to create a .asoundrc file without success.
I updated my kernel as you suggested. Now my keyboard don't work and I can't log in !
By the way, there's no 3.2.0-0.bpo.4-amd64, just 3.2.0-0.bpo.3-amd64.
Thanks for your help.

Oh. I must be confusing versions with the ones in the debian testing repo.
Can you be more precise:
- can you select the new kernel in GRUB? Do the arrow keys work?
- Do you get to the login screen?
- Can you switch to a vc (virtual console)? Try Ctrl+Alt+F2. Can you login there?
USB keyboard?

I retried and it worked.
But, I still have no sound and I did not test my wifi in upload mode but what is really boring is that my wifi password is not saved, I have to enter it at each reboot.
I also tried Fedora (XFCE) for comparison, sound is ok but it's the same power management system. Thus, after the sleep mode, the screen is not switching on either.
