[SOLVED] Wireless will not connect

Just recently installed Crunchbang Waldorf on my Acer Aspire One 722. My problem is that it will not connect to any local wireless networks. Two here are open, and one is secured (I forget the protocol). Upon selecting them in nm-applet it will spin for a while then show "The network connection has been disconnected", stop, then resume the cycle. I've tried it on all three networks and none of them work.

According to lsmod the ath9k module is loaded.

I have the same problem on a different HW.

I did a clean install of crunchbang-11-20120927-amd64.iso on a Dell Inspiron 531 system with a wireless USB adapter (Netgear WG111v3). I tried connecting to my WPA/PSK network and got the exact same behavior. The network manager icon spins for a while then stops and shows "The network connection has been disconnected", stops and then resumes the cycle.

This problem is not very critical since that's not my main PC, but the previous Lubuntu installation (I cannot recall the exact version) worked fine with the same adapter.

UPDATE: It appears to do the same thing over the wired connection, so it doesn't seem to be the hardware. We are using a proxy for all http(s) usage here. I've tried to specify the netmask and gateway in /etc/network/interfaces but it makes no difference.
I've also tried installing and using wicd- this is a little more verbose than network-manager, and although it gives the same result (will not connect) it spends most of its time trying to "receive IP address".
Any ideas?

Found a solution: It appears to be as simple as setting the netmask, gateway, and static IP address. I did this in network-manager, by right clicking the applet and editing the wireless connection.
