[SOLVED]: Thunar opens some files but not others from Network

This weekend I put #! Waldorf 20120927 on a 2008 vintage dual core Athlon desktop PC with 8G RAM and Nvidia graphics (7300 something or other).

Went through the cb-welcome script, quitting without installing ssh stuff.

Installed LibreOffice (LO) and Chrome from the menu.

Installed the LO pdf-import extension from Synaptic.

Installed PlayOnlinux and Wine  from Synaptic so I can run LTspiceIV.

Installed Openshot, Kicad and Unetbootin from Synaptic.

I have a Buffalo NAS which I can see and browse around in Thunar. I can save files to it and copy files from it.

The problem is that some files I can open from it, some I cannot.

If I open a .pdf on the NAS, it opens in whatever the pdf doc viewer is called (haven't got the hang of all the program names yet).

However, if I open a text file - with or without a .txt suffix - Geany opens but shows no file.

If I open a .jpg from it, the image viewer (Viewnior?) program opens but shows no file.

If I open a .odt (LO Writer) file, LO opens but shows no file.

However, if I open a .ods (LO Calc) file, LO opens and shows me the file.

I haven't had time to try other LO file types yet.

This is a right pain as it means I have to copy a file to my machine just to open it.

If I want to edit it then I have to copy it to my machine than I can save it back to the NAS.

I used to have a similar problem with Mepis 7 and 8 but not with Linux Mint Debian Edition though I never found out what made the difference.

I've had a hunt round the forums and have found:

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … oc-issues/

http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/s … ith_thunar

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … -and-easy/

but apart from the first one, haven't spotted anything that helps.

Some help on this would be very much appreciated.

BTW: I'm also posting an enquiry about another LO related problem which may or may not be related:

Is your user account a member of the "fuse" group? You can check with the command:

groups

If not, attempt to add your user account to the fuse group like so:

sudo usermod -a -G fuse $USER

Logout and login. Does it make any difference?

@corenominal,

Deep joy!

Wasn't in the fuse group.

sudo usermod -a -G fuse $USER

fixed it.

Many thanks.
