Spoke to soon it would seem
Trying to invoke the Catalyst Centre using amdcccle gives the following error: there was a problem initializing catalyst control center linux edition
If I look at fglrxinfo, there is also an error
david@crunchbang:~$ fglrxinfo

Well that didn't update the kernel, how do I update to the latest kernel in the bpo?
sudo apt-get -t squeeze-backports linux-image-3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 linux-headers-3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64Reboot, and follow this guide: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … s-drivers/

insert "install" after "-t squeeze-backports"
bootinfoscript - emacs primer - I ♥ #!

Done that now, tried instructions from other thread, installing using smxi but it halts due to a current installation of fglrx being detected.
I've backed out of that and went to uninstall via
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/amd-uninstall.sh #let is finish its job sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorgconf-old sudo update-grub sudo rebootIf you're just doing a quick uninstall to install a new version of the driver, download the driver to the directory:
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/smd-uninstall.sh sudo reboot
But the uninstall scripts don't exist, only 5 fglrx-uninstall.log files and a amdpcsdb file are present in /etc/ati/
Under /usr/share/ati/ only a fglrx-install.log file exists
How else am I too proceed?

How else am I too proceed?
Pick the "install radeon driver" option in smxi. Then try to install fglrx manually, not via smxi.

Just like to say thank you so much for posting this installation, it worked like a charm on my Debian Squeeze 64 bit box and now runs Google Earth very well. I appreciate your efforts. - Paul
