Installing Wine help.

I'm having trouble installing wine. I've tried everything google has gave me and still getting errors when trying to install. I'm stuck, scared, lost, and confused. If anyone could give me a hand here that'd be great!

I'm a new user to the world of Linux, so please, explain to me like I'm five please. neutral

Re: Installing Wine help.

It's no help at all, but when I left windows a few years ago, one of the first things I did was try and sort out Wine. Then I realised it's horrible and unnecessary. I don't need it at all (I expect you might though...)

What seems to be the problem with installing it anyway?

Have a look in synaptic package manager to see if its there.

sudo apt-get install wine

sudo apt-get install winetricks

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

Re: Installing Wine help.

Thanks d!

I ran the fist command you listed and it worked! I was trying to install the package manually. tongue

Now I'm having trouble locating (from what I've read on how to use wine) the .wine folder?

Any insight? Apologize for my lack of basic know how.

Re: Installing Wine help.

^ Open Thunar (that's your file manager) and press Ctrl-H to see hidden files and directories.  (All file/directory names that start with a period are hidden by default.)

EDIT:  And either we're all n00bs, or we're all actually experts in training. wink

Re: Installing Wine help.

Thanks for the reply pvsage. smile

I have hidden files showing, but the .wine file isn't there (/home/user).

I ran -

sudo apt-get install wine
sudo apt-get install playonlinux

Both worked and installed but winetricks did not (Could this be the reason?)

Re: Installing Wine help.

Maybe you can create the .wine folder.

I am a complete n00b, especially compared to some of the dudes on here.

Still, why do you want to use Wine? not iTunes, surely? oh no...

Re: Installing Wine help.

Also, why do you need to access the .wine folder anyway? I don't think I ever had to when I used Wine. From my knowledge you just right click to open whatever ms app with Wine. Winetricks or playonlinux gives you a selection of applications.

You'd probably just open winetricks by typing 'winetricks' in terminator, and add it to menu.xml if you want

iTunes has never worked via it for me. And I don't like the idea of having to try and use those restrictive applications anyway. No need for them in my life anymore (never was, of course...)

Re: Installing Wine help.

@D!:  With some programs that come in self-extracting installers, you first need to run the installer in Wine, *then* find the installed program in "/home/<user>/.wine/drive_c/Program Files".  (In Gnome, and I think in Xfce, these programs are automatically added to the Wine submenu, but since the Openbox menu isn't self-updating, you need to find them yourself.)

EDIT:  What I would try if I couldn't find /home/<user>/.wine is

sudo apt-get purge wine
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge
sudo apt-get install wine

Re: Installing Wine help.

Or try running the Wine configuration one time and see if that creates the user folder for you. That's what I did... once upon a time....

I luse superbly, with style and aplomb.

Re: Installing Wine help.

Usually it creates the ~/.wine folder when you run "winecfg" or something like that iirc. It's been a few since I tried to run anything in wine.

Re: Installing Wine help.

I just use playonlinux. It simplifies or at least has easy pointers to just about anything you need to do. It will even install multiple WINE versions for programs that work better with previous releases. You should try using it to manage everything.

Re: Installing Wine help.

Sorry for the late response everyone! I was away from home for a couple of days, but thank you to everyone in this thread!

I was able to run the .exe program through command line. But after installing wine, the .wine folder didn't show up (I did have hidden folders showing) untill AFTER I restarted. I don't know what good that info is but it was just something I noitced.

Again, thanks everyone in this thread. It is very much appreciated. smile

Re: Installing Wine help.

To show the .wine folder in your home directory after a new WINE installation:

winecfg

(& a little window will pop up saying /home/user/.wine is being updated)
