^ Did you try smxi and the older driver, like @el_k suggested? Instructions for using smxi are in the thread I linked a few posts back.

The older drivers will not work with the version of X in #! Waldorf and further. Your two choices in the Linux world at this moment are Ubuntu or the open source driver.
