That's why you shouldn't just overwrite /etc/hosts. If you use a hostsfile for adblocking you should use dnsmasq and add a seperate hostsfile for adblocking in the config, like /etc/hosts.block. This will also reduce Hardware-Usage significantly. To use the stuff from the archforums, just look at the PKGBUILD and copy the files accordingly. Then set up dnsmasq like described here: http://www.debian-administration.org/ar … th_dnsmasq but instead of adding every single address from the hostsfile, do as I said above and add it as a second hostsfile. For extra speed you can use pixelserv to redirect the blocked ads to a 1x1 gif.

No special need to set your host's name. Otherwise you know why do you need such a thing and know how you set it when you need. ;D

Re: Luakit

Small updates to adblock for luakit.
• Changed several commands.
• Changed luakit://adblock/ page a bit.
• Still open to take in account your suggestions about how should actions like «subscribe-to-a-new-list» and others work.
• Introducing soon: automatic updates of the lists you subscribe to (when added such a feature in adblock.lua) with the aid of crontabbed adblock-update.sh shell script.

Anyone who want to test it and/or fork it — welcome!

Re: Luakit

Now luakit://adblock/ looks like that (for me, external updates, no subscription URIs yet introduced):

AdBlock module: Enabled
AdBlock is in normal mode. 14148 rules blacklisting, 1378 rules whitelisting.
Enabled
easylist.txt: (b7108/w831)
fanboy-adblock.txt: (b7036/w546)
user-custom.txt: (b4/w1)

Re: Luakit

Testing:
• Reorganized filter rules lists and moved each list's filter rules into the appropriate item, so disabling and enabling filter rules now apply as soon as them get disabled/enabled.

Re: Luakit

Hey guys,

I love the work you've done on the ad-blocking script and wiki page. You guys have made it really plainless to install/configure/use ad-blocking in luakit.

I'm currently doing an overhaul of the luakit:// pages at the moment (in the `chrome-upgrade` branch) and I'll add this module to the list and then merge it in.

P.S. Next on my wish-list is adding some security/privacy features from xxxterm into luakit. We have most of the API already but it's not trivial to setup. Any help or experience in this area would be awesome.

Happy hacking!

Yaahoooo! Now I know where the author of Luakit is from! ;D

No, you SHOULD NOT include this module into the main project. I am pretty sure there are a lot of arbitrary — and maybe conflicting with each other — modules for Luakit, and many of them worth being assembled into a swiss-knife library maintained separately and in a similar manner, each one of them. This may give many developers some strong right thumb rules and ease use/development/enhancement of those addons.

Gonna merge the adblock.lua module into such a library, then redesign it using Wladimir Palant's polite hints about filtering speed-up. And I need to be sure that each piece of code that is re-usable in other modules will be placed into an appropriate lib module. And then you may find it worthy and include in the main project.

Also, such a repo could result in a distro package to be called like luakit-addons or somewhat.

One thing more why shouldn't you merge all addons into luakit main project. I suppose there should be a team to maintain modules repo without a need to involve you each time a merge required, so the repo should be a team-accessible repo, without an opportunity to break luakit repo, so thus another one, team-driven.

What you say?

Upd0: Blondies can code, too! ;D
Upd1: Yes, sometimes I can!! ;D
Upd2: Yeah, I know in the pic is not a blondie; it's all because it's Sarah's pic! ;”D

Re: Luakit

luakit-adblock:

• Now testing rules cache to avoid filter rules duplication from a filter to another one.
• luakit-adblock will be merged into a new addons library repo, as that library forms up.

Well yes, it goes without saying that I would have poured over the code to make sure it was stable enough to be included. And I like the idea of having a separate repo for luakit plugins. And we can use it as a staging area prior to any of the plugins being included in the stock luakit.

What I like! Hey, tell me once, can there be ever a translated to other language(s) mirror for luakit wiki? I guess I'd be delighted to provide ru_RU section for it. Do you mind?

Re: Luakit

AdBlock moved to Luakit Plugins (https://github.com/mason-larobina/luakit-plugins/).
One may find there AdBlock (separated into essential adblock and optional adblock.chrome /webpage/ modules) and User Agent Switch (uaswitch) plugins.
Configuration is being kept apart and includes disabling/enabling modules you want to use. No preconfiguration required, no faults should happen in case you forgot a step. ;D

Re: Luakit

I didn't know about luakit before seeing this topic, thank you for the tip wink
I'm a vi(m) lover and I do like things to be lightweight, so luakit seems to be made for me big_smile
I don't know about the performance yet (since I'm using in in a vm @ work, gonna test it when I got home) but so far the navigation is great

If you access the internet through a proxy like me just enter the command :proxy, it's intuitive

Anyway I would like to ask from where you guys recommend to install it from? I've installed it from the debian sid repository, and I had to manually install the package liblua5.1-0 hmm

I can't use Firefox just because of performance; now my two are luakit and w3m to read local HTML Lua docs when I screw up luakit config. ;D

Thank you for your hint about proxy; I think that luakit users'd better be able to read lua configs and libs «in the wild», yes just to know what they can do and why.

I started to use luakit from Ubuntu repository, there was no problem with deps; now from git branch develop at github. Heheh, I never knew what Lua is; I never used vi/VIm before that. Now I like the concept. ^,^

Re: Luakit

when i saw this thread title, the first instant was "oh yeah, i know luakit, i prefer uzbl", but immediately after thinking that, i realised i couldnt remember what luakit was like.   ... was it like surf?   so i installed it and gave it a whirl... "ah yeah, it's like dwb".  wink

much respect to luakit.

... but i cant see it being a uzbl beater for me.

only point against uzbl i can think of, is that it doesnt do tabbing all that well (not that i really know, since i havnt used uzbl-tabbed for ages).  there dwb, luakit and xxxterm/xombrero take the lead.  but i still love uzbl more of how well it integrates with 'nix.   very powerful.

but i will play around with luakit a bit more, see what it's got.  smile

Well, some time ago I was asking my apt for a browser that could fit my needs and for a window manager. I did not realize at all what I've done when I started luakit for the very first time, and I smile confused a bit when I remind myself of that day. All the same thing came to greet me when I tried awesome WM, but it met an armed user with a strong desire to `just f***ing make it work, but not any of GNOMEs/KDEs/LXDE/XFCEs’.

Mostly hear on luakit like as a secondary «Surf-replacement» while my secondary is w3m just because I want to browse local HTML docs on Lua when I break something in Luakit: yes, I am a tester, then a developer, and I know almost nothing on both Lua and Luakit. So every time I write a thing to enhance my primary browser Luakit… well, it's probably the source of a crash or a strange behaviour.

I don't recommend anyone to use Luakit or not to use. See, first of all, it's your own decision; all we are encouraged in a Socium Libre is sharing experience and knowlegde. I can't say I know uzbl: I tried to use it and it did not show me it's what I need. Well, I did a second-play-to-revenge just now. A cool one, maybe a robust one, too. I simply don't like when a browser tries to get me stressed like it does. ;D  For me, Firefox is just enough to shoot each thing that starts it; I even don't need to bind `killall firefox` to keyboard shortcut, because it's slow enough to die when I start a terminal and type it myself before it creates any window.

I just know I love Luakit. ;D

Re: Luakit

Please, note, that https://github.com/mason-larobina/luakit-plugins/ will have `candidates` branch from now: to test extensions before including them into the main package.

Already provided:

• AdBlock
• User Agent Switcher
• Tab Menu

According to user proposals, there will be several add-ons included too, to simplify setting up most generally wished features as told at Wiki or requested from contributors before it falls into luakit mainstream (for instance, not everyone needs yanking current selection, using external video player or switching tabs in a menu). Everything you'd like to have next time you set up your new luakit installation may come there, in luakit plugins repository.
