PCManFM most of the time. Thunar for mounting/dismounting USB thumb drives and external hard drives. I have 4Pane and Double Commander installed on my little 12-inch ASUS laptop, but I don't really use those on a regular basis. I installed them because they looked promising, but there are some things that just don't work well when using them.

My PCManFM can mount/dismount without any problems. What doesn't work with your's?

If I plug in a USB thumb drive, formatted as NTFS, or an external hard drive, formatted as NTFS, I get the following error message:
'Failed to mount "xxxx". ntfs-3g-mount: user has no write access to mountpoint /media/usb0.'
where xxxx is the named device
If I attempt to access either device with PCManFM, I get the following error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
Error opening '/dev/sdb1': Permission denied
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Permission denied
Please check '/dev/sdb1' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,
and the mounting user ID. More explanation is provided at
http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#unprivileged
I've gotten around this issue by opening Thunar as root and accessing either device. Then I can access either device with PCManFM.
If I attempt to dismount/eject either device in PCManFM, I get the following error:
"Failed to eject media; one or more volumes on the media are busy."
Again, I get around the dismount/eject issue by dismounting in Thunar running as root.

Strange. I used both Thunar and PCManFM on several installs and they always mounted any devices without any trouble.
Come to think of it, one time I had a similar problem. It was when I was upgrading CB Statler to the Wheezy repositories and searched for an alternative for GDM (because it was no longer in the repository and replaced by the heavier GDM3). I used XDM first and had trouble with certain rights, as in mounting/dismounting. I got around this via some duckduckgo searches and somehow fixing it but ended up using LightDM anyway when I ran into another problem. Which Display Manager do you use?

I recently came to like 'cd, mv, cp, pmount, pumount'. Works great.

Mostly ranger, sometimes cd, ls, ... , sometimes Thunar or PCmanFM.

I'm using the X window system. I'm fairly confident the display manager has nothing to do with the issue I'm experiencing when mounting NTFS-formatted thumb/hard drives. The issue has something to do with permissions and the ntfs-3g utility.

I'm not as knowledgeable as I should be when it comes to stuff like this but I can just say I had the same problem (amongst others, which I managed to fix, though) when using XDM and I stopped having them when I was using LightDM. It's all in the past and I don't remember the exact details, unfortunately.

I am mostly using Dolphin.
Seems to me that I am the only one on this forum.
On my GTKdesktops I am using Thunar.
I have tested Ranger for a few minutes and must say I am impressed, maybe it is able to replace midnight commander for my cli file manager.

I've been using ranger for several months.

What's your favorite file manager?

Favorite terminal emulator?

Favorite jukebox?

Favorite bear wrestler?
Emacs
(Oh, and I usually stick with the basics for mine -- the coreutils are more than enough for my needs. When I'd like some file previewing and such I pull up Thunar though, mostly for that lightning-fast load time and quick thumbnail generation.)
I luse superbly, with style and aplomb.

Rox-filer, it's awesome.

Thunar right now.
I like Ranger a lot too. That is my main FM when I'm using i3.
PCManFM and Rox are also great options that I've dabbled with.
I've never liked MC. Don't know why.

The default file manager cause I am lazy like that.

Previously pcmanFM 0.5
Now spaceFM.
snap.
there are some really interesting standards defying fm out there.
i'll stick to spacefm though. conventional, familiar, light and feature packed.
[edit-
ps, and after reading this thread... ranger now too. ^_^
golly that's so expedient. makes mc look like a clumsy joke. ... n i say that as a mc & mcedit fan.

Coming from the Commodore Amiga I was glad to see KRUSADER which to me is by far the best file manager around. I use this on my ZorinOS 6 and I have PCmanFM and Thunar on there. Krusader is so beautiful at what it does and its found files missing off other file managers. Spatry cannot get his head around these Krusader double screen managers but its simple when you are old skool. Try Krusader its brilliant and so quick at doing multiple things like spacebar tabbing files for tagging ready for deleting etc.

The latest releases of nautilus before the whole gnome3 fiasco were close to nirvana. They removed most of the clutter, added dual pane option, and some new keybinds by default. Then along came the gnome3 and most of the good work was trashed.
There are many interesting alternatives in this thread. I tried a few, some are interesting. But I cannot find one that is both reliable and has the features I like.
For example, thunar is a very reliable, bug free option, but it doesn't have an option to connect to sftp servers. This is rather lame IMHO.
PCManFM, does have that feature, but for some reason it doesnt refresh remote directories on my sistem. If I go on the server and add a file to a directory, if that directory have been opened already in PCmanFM, its view won't be updated. I don't know if other people have this issue, but this is a rather major bug for a file manager.
Today I tried:
vifm <--love it but it can't connect through sftp
mucommander <--nice, but I can't edit files, I get an error when trying to save them. Also, I'm not sure it has a quick view feature
I'll guive krusader a try.
