The first time I launch File Manager (Thunar 1.2.3) in a new session, it takes about 30 seconds. Moreover, after about 10 seconds, another same window opens.
Is this anything to do with the dual boot (with Windows XP) on the machine?

It's a known bug in the version of Thunar in the Wheezy repos. The simplest solution is to remove gvfs-backends; if you need to mount network shares, there's a link in the thread referenced above to a thread at the XFCE forum with a kludge to keep gvfs-backends from trying to mount network shares the first time you launch Thunar.
while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );
