I hate to be totally obvious (actually, no-I-don't!), but have you tried the DMZ-Black theme that you get out of the box? 
I find that it works quite nicely, and lets me easily tell where my mouse actually is with the outlining of it and all that.
I luse superbly, with style and aplomb.

I prefer the default x cursor theme. So I just uninstall all the mouse cursors and have the simple x default!

That should do it, yep. And yeah, the default X cursor theme is actually pretty cool by itself. 
Edit: Oh, and you'll probably have to log out and back in again to get the changes to stick, by the way. Mouse cursors are annoying like that.
