Very Good How To ...
Personally, I am never in a hurry to get to the Next Xfce always seems to meet my needs in the Current Stable.
My Slackware is Xfce 4.6 and I believe Wheezy and Sid are 4.8...
However, it is always fun to get to the next Greatest.
Example, I note that the Weather Panel app works poorly with 4.6 and better with 4.8

^ Thanks.
I also find the xfce4-weather-plugin extremely useful, it's my main weather checking resource. And now with it's newer features... You really should check the latest versions, it's way better and reliable. And it works with Xfce 4.6 so you might want to try it without upgrading Xfce. More info here.
Overall, I like to experience the advances in reliability and newer features of software, in this particular case of Xfce. It's my working Desktop environment so how it works has great influence on my productivity and workflow. But I can't say I was in a hurry. A full month had passed since the release of Xfce 4.10 and curiosity led me to it.
I must say I'm thankful. I was before on the position of a user that was experiencing problems with Xfce and now I was able (with help) to resolve them and upgrade to a newer version (better in my experience) that most (Debian) users won't until it's provided. So I wanted to share.
I try to mix the stability and reliability with the newer features. Currently I'm a "debian testing" kind of guy. But I might go all the way to unstable/sid. Just because debian unstable seems more reliable than not, for a desktop environment, that is.

does Xfce4.10 require #!11 or #!10 ?
Offline
You can get it to work on either... It is only available from the debian experimental repos.
It is much easier to get it to work on 11 (Waldorf) IMO.

I get Broken Packages message with #!10 should I install something else before that ?

What do you mean by broken packages? When reporting errors it's good to post the exact error messages and context.

By "brazilian language" you mean portuguese (from brazil) language, right?
Nice how-to, pictures and all. I personally feel that "dpkg -i --force" installs may be dangerous and compromise the stability, they shouldn't be required so I don't recommend them. But it worked for you so it may work for others.

omns wrote:It's a shame 4.10 won't make it into testing but understandable seeing as Xfce is going to be the default first CD desktop in Wheezy.
I would be happy to see it move from Experimental to Sid and all packages updated to work with just the meta package apt-get install xfce4.
This would eliminate 99% of these issues.
^ Indeed! No need to this how-to then!
An update to all apps surrounding Xfce 4.10 is now in experimental, including orage and xfce4-mixer that now works with the 4.10 xfce4-panel
Now the meta package of Xfce 4.10 can be installed. If you have
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-freein your /etc/apt/sources.list, the following will install Xfce 4.10 and all the goodies
sudo apt-get -t experimental install xfce4VSIDO

^ Thank you, Vastone, but are you sure?
The changelog for the package xfce4/experimental doesn't mention any changes:

^ I just did an install on three machines of xfce 4.10 by just using the meta packages.. that was failing before.
You are correct, all of the xfce4-goodies package are still in a strange flux

I installed all of them except the xfswitch-plugin. That one package wanted to bring in all of Gnome3 and every single one of her dependencies... That I did not want.
Note on the xfswitch-plugin:
Xfswitch-plugin is a user switching plugin for the Xfce4 Panel. It allows you to leave the current session opened and open a new session with another user. At the moment it relies on GDM, but other display managers will be supported in the future.
So except for xfswitch-plugin, everything is fully installed and working fine.

^ Yes I know. I also don't have it installed. It seems an old plugin (2009) and not required so I didn't even mentioned it. User switching works if you use the panel "Action Buttons" switch user, at least with GDM (my case).

I have just tried the Siduction method, but at step 4 (apt-get install....) it fails, stating that xfce4 has unmet dependencies... it depends on thunar >= 1.4.0, but 1.2.3-5-crunchbang1 is to be installed. I have tried 'apt-get -t unstable install thunar', but this still results in 1.2.3-5-crunchbang1 being installed.
What am I doing wrong?

It seems that crunchbang has a higher pinned priority in preferences than anything else. You may want to disable the crunchbang repo temporarily and try it.

@stocc
Very interesting... as two days ago I installed Crunchbang for the wife but she prefers xfce.
So I thought I would use the Siduction method outlined in this post to install xfce 4.10.
I too got to step 4
sudo apt-get install before running into the dependency issue.
I managed to complete the install after step 4
sudo apt-get dist-upgradeNote:I am still not sure about the requirement for Thunar >=1.4.0 as my Thunar remained at the xfce 4.8 version (1.3.2?-away from my Crunchy machine right now so not totally sure of this version number)
I have been running and tweaking xfce 4.10 for the last 2 days and no probs so far
Hope this helps.

Thanks VastOne. You were right! The crunchbang repo had a PIN priority of 1000. I temporarily removed it and all installed OK.

Hmm...maybe I should try this to get the latest Thunar into my xfce 4.10
Thanks for the tip.

Trouble is, if you reinstate the Crunchbang repo, or it's pinned priority, thunar (or any other package freezed on Crunchbang repositories) will be downgraded to Crunchbangs version. Somewhere along the future you'll have to decide which one to keep. In my case I'm currently running full unstable/sid and thunar 1.5.0
