Finally got round to saying hello.
Some history. Not a geek (rather, a bit of a slow learner IT-wise), but attracted by the Free Software philosophy, I first read about Stallman and software freedom in 2002. Spent the next 6 years gradually replacing the apps on my Windows desktop with Free Software. In 2008 I finally got a working Linux system - an Asus eee. The following year I bought a desktop box from Linux Emporium - a wonderful shop, the nice people there gave me tons of help when I didn't know what I was doing. From then on I happily ran Ubuntu as my main OS until Unity came along and spoiled it. During this period I was also experimenting with other OSs (I had three spare systems partitions on the desktop, which the Emporium people set up for me). #! was always attractive for its clean interface, speed and anti-cruft philosophy, so I decided to make the switch.
So here I am. Struggling a bit with the audio, but very happy to be here.

thanks folks,
I've just managed to lock myself out of my #! install - I installed solusos and it overwrote the grub menu with just its own entry. So I'm frantically studying grub tutorials to try to get back in. But I'll be back soon no doubt with plenty of questions.

Welcome to CrunchBang, John, and hope you get the grub thing sorted out -- oh, and by the way, there's a lot of info on the forums here. Enjoy!

Welcome to #!
There's a lot to be said for RMS and the FSF. Sometimes appears taken to extremes, but just as essential as LT to Linux.
Glad you made it .

Hi all,
thanks for the warm welcome! Don't worry, merelyjim, I'm not a zealot... I can't afford to be with the amount of proprietary software I've got loaded here
