Under Waldorf, I can access my Samsung Galaxy S3 (internal memory and the SD slot) via gMTP. After much testing, I've determined that the libmtp in the repos (1,1,3) does not work well with the S3 (and other Samsung devices?). To access the S3 via MTP, I downloaded and compiles libmtp 1.1.3 and gMTP 1.3.3. This requires that the previous libmtp be removed. I did this already to get it to work, but noticed today that vlc was no longer installed. I installed VLC. Later I tried to connect by MTP, but it did not work. I discovered that libmtp 1.1.3 was back. Now when I purged it I noticed that apt removed vlc as well. Looking through the dependencies, I can't figure out why vlc needs libmtp.
$ apt-cache depends vlc | grep mtpreturns nothing.

apt-cache rdepends libmtp9finds vlc-nox, which is a dependency of vlc. Not sure this helps much.

^ That must be it. vlc needs vlc-nox, which needs libmtp9. Thanks.
