Updated Waldorf "Testing" images: 20120924

Updated Waldorf images are available now.

The updated images include the Debian Installer 7.0 Beta2 release. The main bug fix in the installer that concerns #! is #683849. This bug affected a number of users and rendered the previous images as uninstallable.

Other changes have been kept to an absolute minimum and any existing Waldorf users should not need to perform a new installion, unless they wish to help with testing the install process.

The only changes of minor note are:

  • Due to improvements and fixes applied upstream, the previous Compton/VLC workaround/bug fixing package is now rendered obsolete. If you are running a previous Waldorf installation, you may want to consider removing the package "cb-vlc-fix". The package has been removed from the latest build.

  • Some basic example templates (.sh & .txt) have been included for Thunar. Thanks to Johnraff.

  • Some depreciated syntax in the default Openbox menu and rc files has been updated. -- Johnraff.

  • A new keyboard shortcut has been added for htop (Super+h) -- Johnraff.

  • Issues regarding gnome-keyring should now be resolved.

A huge thank you to everybody who helped out with the previous test builds. As always, if you install these builds and you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to post a reply. Thank you.

Re: Updated Waldorf "Testing" images: 20120924

@corenominal

Some brief feedback on 64bit install;

-> The installer gets to a point where it asks for the Debian Wheezy install disk roll...
CONTINUE results in a message along the lines that... 'man db' could not be read??
Sorry, I should have taken more detailed notes.
However, CONTINUE again from this point with the installation process and installation appears to complete OK.
Note: I think I am correct in saying that normally after the install there is a message to remove the install medium - but not this time I had to force an eject of the DVD sad

-> The post-install script is very slow to download -  much slower than usual - maybe your server load this evening? In fact as I write this summary it is grinding to a halt from time to time...net seems OK otherwise.

-> Installation has low RAM usage at 'idle' - install script only - 200MB/3966MB big_smile
-> I like the Super+h shortcut cool

I will edit this post as necessary...after the post-install script has completed.

Looking forward to further testing...

I have checked the #! repos and they seem okay. It could be that there is a problem with the Debian repo. By default, #! is set to use ftp.debian.org, you could attempt to change this to a local repo, such as ftp.uk.debian.org, and see if it makes a difference.

Re: Updated Waldorf "Testing" images: 20120924

@corenominal

Yep - changed to my German neighbours at ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ and cb-welcome is downloading at expected speeds.
This reminds me...I normally have the option in the installer to select a mirror,in my case I normally use the Luxembourg 'debian.mirror.root.lu'...but I am quite sure I wasn't given the option to select a mirror in the installer this time sad

Do you have any ideas about my installer issues?
Thanks for your input.

...cb-welcome completed OK and back in Crunchy land cool

Update: back with local Luxy repo...no probs.
Chromium and Dropbox installed cool

Just can't express how valuable I feel corenominal's work is. There's for sure no one else around who does that much for the perfect openbox distro.
I love crunchbang and use it daily on my work-notebook. But even my Arch workstation is modeled after crunchbang cause I think it's just perfect.
Thanks again corenomial!

Nice to see some community patches making their way into the distro. Great work John. I think many people underestimate how much corenominal takes into account community feedback, suggestions and offerings like scripts and patches when putting CrunchBang together. Nice one all round smile

Fresh install of 64bit torrent iso. No, I did not check md5 sum, but burned to rw-dvd with xfburn at slowest speed. Everything went fine, except towards the end, same problem as chamelon had. But the install seems ok.

SpaceFM is not even in debian yet.  It most likely will happen when Wheezy/Testing goes stable due to dependencies needed from Wheezy..

It is a catch 22 situation.. by the time SpaceFM makes it to the Debian Repos, Waldorf #! will have been released as stable and will not include such a radical change.  We could hope for a point release in the future as a possibility.

BTW, well done corenominal on another successful release.

Re: Updated Waldorf "Testing" images: 20120924

@corenomial:  My Linux journey started with LM Gnome then LMDE then Debian Testing XFCE and then to #! XFCE.  I eventually started playing around with WMs as opposed to DEs, and I installed Fluxbox over #! XFCE.  When I had to replace my hard drive, my plan was to reinstall #! XFCE, but by that time Waldorf Testing was out and there was no more XFCE version.  It would have been easy to just add XFCE on top of Waldorf, but I thought that I would give Openbox a shot.  Wow!  This is the perfect setup.  It's light, fast, and easy to use because of how well you have configured it.

Thanks so much!

@384403, the previous files were still using '<execute>', which has now been replaced with '<command>'. For more information, please see: http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Actions#Execute

@mikhou, I am glad you are enjoying it. I love Xfce too, but I always return to Openbox smile
