I am using Lubuntu now. I was thinking about going with Bodhi.
But, if Ubuntu is going to be ad supported, I don't know what is going to happen to distros based on Ubuntu.
I used Debian for a long time, I'm thinking of going back.

It's my understanding you can just uninstall the 3 or so ad related packages. That said, Debian or Crunchbang is a great alternative.

First, as I understand it, it's a Unity thing, so it will only involve Ubuntu 12.10 and not the other *buntus like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, etc. So if you're already with Lubuntu, this really doesn't affect you.
Also, there's a really easy fix:
sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping
The intention or philosophy behind doing this is essentially the 800-gorilla in the room. I'd avoid Ubuntu on principal for this reason -- and believe me, I do -- but I would continue to urge folks to use whatever works for them. For me it's Debian and CrunchBang.

I think the term 'ad supported' is a little bit of here. It's just another lens.
I'm not even sure if they make any money of this.

#! is partially ad-supported as well; advertising is a very common business practice and trying to avoid it in this life is likely futile.

It's also a potentially very annoying business practice. I make far bigger concessions to avoid it as far as possible than pick a different Linux distro.

I think the difference between CrunchBang and Ubuntu here is that corenominal doesn't embed advertising in the window manager and/or the default browser that you encounter while using CrunchBang.
Yeah, there's ads on the home page for Linode and for something else, which escapes me at the moment, but it's not part of the #! operating system itself.
The Ubuntu model here, though minor and arguably ineviatble (and I would argue against its inevitability), is intrusive, even on a very small scale.

They're integrating amazon search in the dash, and as I see it, there is nothing wrong with that. Of course, having all the choice of excellent distros and the fact that you haven't/wouldn't pay a single dime to use Ubuntu in the first place makes the transition to something else, provided you feel your privacy's at stake, much more easier.

There was also one about the lens showing NSFW book covers.
Another thing: Canonical is NOT getting paid for this, this is just like the Wikipedia lens - nothing wrong with it (but probably Amazon filling their huge wallets even more).
Another Another thing: The lens does not directly query the amazon servers but uses some JSON-API on a subdomain of ubuntu.com (Can't seem to find the damn link right now). The API is not limited to only amazon so more could follow.

How does this actually differ from the Wikipedia option in Gnome 3 Shell at the bottom?
+ Can Gnome 3 have more of these options similar to torrent lens in Unity and Youtube lens?
Thanks guys!

A lot of distros need donations and/or ads to survive. Some distros would be fine without this, like Debian, Fedora, openSUSE and I think Arch and Mageia too. So, if you want a distro without ads and without pleadings for donations, those are good examples.

I moved from Ubuntu because of Unity more than anything else. Just it's lack of configurabilitly spoke volumes about where Mr. Shuttleworth wants the distro to move to and it's somewhere I didn't want to end up at and I've never had really smooth experiences with different DE spins of the distro.
The affiliate advertising can be disabled but it struck me as lacking class to put something like that in your OS by default. I thought the newly added request for donations on download was a less invasive way of monetizing the OS, but maybe the request for donations doesn't work that well.

Go to ZorinOS6 instead or keep away from Ubuntu entirely especially since they hang around with Microsoft the puppets of The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists pirates of the Livery system ruling class. Ubuntu should get golden boy Gates to donate and take them over turning Ubuntu into Windows 8 yuk!
