SpaceFM as default file manager

hi this is my first post on crunchbang forum. i wanted to switch from arch linux to debian for a change and landed on crunchbang. it's a fantastic os and i have been enjoying it for the past few weeks.
I feel it can be made more awesome if spacefm with udevil (developed by ignorantguru) is included as the default manager.  it's in active development but surprisingly stable, lightweight and feature-full.

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

I would support this move.  Other advantages spaceFM has is how configurable it is and in supporting scripts and plugins from the community.

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

Personally, I'm not fond of SpaceFM, but I don't use a GUI file manager so it doesn't really matter to me.

VastOne, wasn't it you who said (about changing the default anything in #!) something like: "One will like it, one will hate it, and the rest won't really care?"

^ Yes, I did say that. Good memory recall... smile

In this case, I am one who has no use at all for Thunar.

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

How similiar is it to PCManFM? I've only found PCManFM to be very buggy.

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

^ Not much it looks similar because spacefm is the continuation of PCManFM-Mod which is based on PCManFM.
Much of the underlying code has been rewritten to improve and add functionality.
It works very well and is very stable.

I think spacefm would be a much better default file manager than thunar.

I've tested SpaceFM a couple of days ago, and I've been very impressed. Great stuff! smile

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

So, I have not tried SpaceFM since it started as a hack to condense the collective dissatisfaction of the hive mind. What I just saw:
° A file manager that saves it's user settings in /etc using gksu or not at all.
° Loads network shares with udevil
° Weird tiling
° Tabs and tiles
° Half menu driven, half depending on shortcuts

It still looks like a blend of the collective dissatisfaction of the hive mind. I hope this will turn into software one day.

@ Awebb that is a terrible terrible metaphor for SpaceFM and I think it is quite inappropriate for a thread on a serious topic.

I have to agree.  Car anyone?

SpaceFM is like a well-built, ugly car, a 1970 Fiat 500. You know you're too young and shouldn't drive it, but you know you want to. You don't know all the controls and you definitely know you'll mess it up. So you wait until your mature enough and it's lost the rough edges a 2012 Fiat 500. In the meantime you play with your Hot Wheels.

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

By the way, I've started configuring the latest version I quite like it.  I start it with:

spacefm -n

so it always open in my home folder with no other tabs open:

acwSuwgj.jpg

@ vicshrike - take it for a test drive - it's really quite nice!

This is a harsh place with posts like the above. Awebb, this is a Linux forum with members who like all kinds of file managers. Just because you don't care for SpaceFM doesn't mean you should use such offending metaphores to describe it. Don't be so careless!!

My son didn't understand the concept of a committed relationship, so I told him it's like making a girl your default browser.

Re: SpaceFM as default file manager

^ I would ask again that if members have a problem with a another members post that you use the report link and let a moderator deal with it. There is no need to flame each other here. The offending metaphor has been removed.

--omns

Edit: thanks to the many members who did use the report link. Appropriate action has been taken and to avoid further unrest this thread will be closed. Another post can be started if a sensible debate about this file manger would like to be continued.
