Introduction

Hi

I've been experimenting with Linux on and off for about a year now and I must say that #! is very impressive. I came across it while looking for a distro that was good for programming. I started with ubuntu and fedora, but found that they hide behind a GUI a little too much for my liking. #! actually seems to subtly discourage the use of the GUI. The only configuration GUI I've found is for configuring the GUI and even then I still had to go into scripts to change things. I can now gladly say that my distro searching days are over.

I'm a grade 12 high school student in love with programming. I installed #! onto my families old HP desktop to expand my knowledge and understanding of programming. My programming classes at school only deal with Microsoft and C# and hardly ever mention Linux or other languages. Now I only use my Windows machine for running Steam and other games until I learn how to port them over (which will be more fun than actually playing them!) .

Right now my rig is #! with a Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz (hyper-threading) processor, 1.5 GB of ram and an ATI Radeon X800 graphics card running 2 CRT monitors. I've connected this to my Windows Gaming Rig(Intel Core i7 Quad core 3.6GHz (hyper-threading), 16 GB ram, ATI Radeon HD 7770, single monitor) with synergy. I have yet to link their hard drives, but I'm working on that now.

I look forward to working with you all

Rob

Re: Introduction

If someone is looking for the adventures that happen inside the realm of OS, they definitely need to ditch GUIs. Well, not ditch GUI totally, but at least get intimate enough with the terminal to easily ignore GUI. In my opinion, that is the only way to understand the ins and outs or an OS.
Happy exploring Mjothvitnir smile
