^ yes, that was the point of going to antiX -- I believe they will continue to support non-PAE kernels.
antiX v12 uses Debian testing sources, so it's not that much different from Waldorf under the hood...
right...we can only hope that papanominal will give us some of his time

I messaged Corenominal about this, he said he is considering putting back the option for i486, if you would all like to see this in the next release then say so!
Corenominal does read these forums and listens to us, as proven by the browser thread a little while ago.

Installing i486 kernel is among the first things I do after fresh install, but it would by great to have it by default

Martha says this is a "Good Thing". I concur.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but why did it take a PM to bring this thread to his attention, especially considering Waldorf development is currently the main focus of The CrunchBang Project?

So did I, like announced.
I'd say a second kernel on the live disk would be great (select at bootloader time) and maybe an option to select PAE or not.
I'm so meta, even this acronym

I dont think it did, my pm had a few different things in, and one of them was about including i468.
So did I, like announced.
My Pm to him was sent a few days ago, i just didnt get around to putting what he said in this thread until today.

I hope that the i486 will again be an option. If the i486 kernel is default than more people will be able to use crunchbang. It is not hard to add the pae kernel if your machine needs it.

Let us clear some stuff. Debian will not drop support for non-pae kernels for the mid to long future. Debian always conservative about dropping support for deprecated or old hardware. But Debian moved non-pae kernel to the I486 kernel. Also support for the Intel Pentium Processor also moved to the i486 architecture. I know that because I also have an Intel Pentium Laptop and couldn't run Woldorf cause it's missing pae component(according to the error message at boot).

New #! user,
I asked about the non-pae kernel in another thread and got referred to this thread. Will loading the i486 kernel allow me to upgrade from 2.6 to the newer kernel and to be able to update the apps? My laptop is listed below with specs. TIA

That Thinkpad storms along at 1.2GHz, I'm running Statler on a 630MHz Celeron with a 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-486 kernel.
Everything except flashy (YouTube, Facebook et al) websites runs just fine.
I had to install using the text based installer and then replace the 686 kernel with the 486 one using Synaptic to download it.
A non-pae kernel as a startup option on the installer would be fantastic (sorry for adding to anyone's workload - I would offer to help but am lost at this kind of level).

This morning, I completed some test builds using the 486 non PAE kernel. All being well, I am planning on updating the Waldorf images next week and I will make available both 486 and 686 versions

Glad to see it...Thanks! Youduhman! I run several Pentium M ThinkPads that need the 486 kernel.

^ Yes.
---Great. but now I think I will just wait and re-install using the 486 version to make sure everything goes right.

---Yeah, I really like my X series Thinkpad. And I still have the original 4200 rpm iPod HD in it. I'm saving my pennies to buy one of those ebay SSD HD to really make it fly. BTW, I have run Windows 7 on it, it was very slow. I think with the SSD and smaller apps it would be functional.
